Vivitek Qumi Q5

Vivitek is one of the leading manufacturers of visual display and presentation products. Their full line of projectors covers a variety of businesses including convention centers and meeting rooms, the education market as well as the consumer market. The Vivitek Qumi is their smallest projector line, and they're great for mobile professionals and consumers who need to carry a projector with them on sales calls, family trips and parties. The Qumi Q5 is currently the smallest model in the Qumi line that also offers the Qumi Q7 and the Qumi 7 Plus. The Q7 models offer higher Lumen counts and contrast, but the Q5 is smaller and lighter, and it has the same resolution as the Q7 models. The brightness and contrast the Q5 offers are more than enough for your living room and bedroom.

Design

The Vivitek Qumi Q5 is one of the smallest projectors that offer up to 500 lumens with native resolution of 1280 x 800 and max resolution of 1600 x 1200 pixels. The projector measures 6.3 x 1.3 x 4.0 inches and it weighs 1.1 pounds. The fixed lens measures just a little over 1" and the projector comes with a manual focus dial. Two sides and the bottom of the projector have vent grilles and the bottom vent gets very warm when the projector is on for a while. We'd suggest that you avoid blocking the bottom exhaust vent when you set up the projector. A 2W mono speaker fires through the side grille and the control buttons hide beneath the top cover. The power on/off button lives on the side of the projector and it takes a very short time for the projector to warm up. The Qumi Q5 targets consumers more than corporate types and the top and bottom covers come in five colors: red, yellow, navy blue, white and black.

All the ports on the Qumi Q5 live on the back of the projector. They include the DC port that works with the included proprietary AC adapter, audio in and out ports, a full size USB port for sharing content via USB keys, portable hard drives and card readers, a full size HDMI port and a universal I/O port for VGA. It works with laptops via HDMI or VGA, the Xbox and PlayStaion via HDMI, and smartphones and tablets that support HDMI. We wish the projector had a built-in SD card slot for photographers to view their photos directly from storage cards. The IR window also lives on the back and you should aim your remote control at the back of the unit to work with the projector.

The Vivitek Qumi Q5 has extra tall rubber feet to elevate the bottom of the projector for better cooling. Two more ports live on the back of the Q5: a tripod port and a docking port for the optional battery pack. Since the Q5's line-of-sight projections are true to the correct angle, using a tripod gives the Q5 the best viewing angles and height options.

What's Included

The Vivitek Qumi Q5 comes with a small remote control (battery pre-installed), a standard HDMI cable, a VGA cable, an A/V cable, an AC adapter along with removable prongs for international AC outlets, a carrying case and printed and CD documents. The Q5 WiFi dongle is also available as an optional accessory. It'll add WiFi to the projector and works with the built-in WebBrowser for viewing online streaming content.

Features

The Vivitek Qumi Q5 is powered by TI's HD Pico DLP technology that's long lasting and power efficient. The lamp-less LED projector offers up to 500 Lumens and 10,000:1 contrast ratio. The native resolution is WXGA 1280 x 800 with support for up to UXGA 1600 x 1200 content. The projector is useable in lit rooms and it's very bright in dimly lit or dark rooms. The Q5 has 1.07B color spectrum, and with the high contrast ratio, the projector is excellent for photo slideshows and movie watching. The fixed lens offers 16:10 native aspect ratio with support for 4:3 and 16:9. The throw ratio is 1.55:1 and the optimal projection distance is between 3.3 to 9.9 feet. The projection image size is between 30 to 90 inches. This makes the Q5 an ideal candidate for the living room and bedroom or a small meeting room. The small projector is very versatile when it comes to mounting options. You can set it up on a table, or mount it on the ceiling or a tripod. You can prop it up on its back and project to the ceiling and watch movies while lying in bed. Just be sure to use an elevated stand that gives enough room for the wires and vent on the Q5.

Vivitek Qumi Q5

The Vivitek Qumi Q5 has 4GB (about 3GB available) built-in storage and it comes with built-in multimedia and document viewers. It detects the input source and when you browse through the media type, the OSD (on-screen display) will show the content from your source in that file type. The Q5 supports a wide variety of file formats. For video playback, the Q5 supports MPEG4, H.264, Divx and WMV movies; for music, it supports MP3, AAC, MIDI, WAV and more. The projector supports image files in JPG, PNG and BMP formats, and it offers up to 16x zoom. The projector also comes with an office viewer that can view Word, Excel, PowerPoint, PDF and TXT files. The viewers offer slideshow mode for photos, zoom for documents and playback controls for music tracks. The built-in mono speaker is loud enough for a small to medium sized meeting room, and you can connect your subwoofer and speakers to the Audio Out port for better audio quality and higher volume.

Vivitek Qumi Q5

The Vivitek Qumi Q5 offers operation controls via both the on-projector buttons and the remote control. You can change brightness, contrast, gamma and more or use the pre-installed display modes (Presentation, Movie, Game, etc.), adjust aspect ratio, keystone angles and set play modes (auto-play, repeat, shuffle, etc.), digital zoom and more.

Conclusion

The advantages of the Pico DLP not only give us smaller and lighter protectors that we can carry in a small gear bag or purse, but also prolong the life and usage time thanks to the LED technology. The Vivitek Qumi Q5 claims 30K hours of life and that's a very long product life in projector land. The DLP Link technology also gives the Qumi series its 3D-ready capabilities. If you're a road warrior who gives presentations often, this small and light protector can handle a small or media conference room quite well. If you like to view your photos or movies on your wall or ceiling, the Q5 is a fun way to do it. The small projector offers plenty of brightness, contrast and it's quite sharp. The projector is easy to set up and operate, and it works with laptops, game consoles and mobile devices once you have the appropriate adapters. The file formats supported by the projector cover most common media and office formats, and the operation is simply plug-n-play. The projector doesn't offer a built-in card reader, and it does get hot when you use it for a couple of hours and the fan generates noticeable noise.
