JadeDragon's reviews and playing tips: Pocket PC games

Blaster by FogNog Software $8.95 US
Reviewed March 2002

If you put Raiden and Galaga together you've got the concept of Blaster, developed by FogNog Software. I say only in concept because Blaster has a much more creative game design, and has much better graphics and sound effects than either Raiden or Galaga. Blaster has 4 long action-loaded levels with lots of power ups, bonus points, a boss at the end of each level and some thumb numbing action! After you finished 4 regular levels you will be rewarded with an extra timed level where you play for as long as you can survive. If I had to recommend 1 arcade game on Pocket PC, Blaster would be the one without a question. I've never seen a flight-shooter game with such fast and furious action along with such beautiful design and graceful rhythm.

Playing Hints and Tips
Bosses:
First boss: You won't hurt the boss when it's in formation. The only thing you can do is dodge its attacks and other incoming enemy crafts. When it breaks its formation into individual flyers, attack them with all you've got. The more you kill here the quicker you will finish the boss.

Second boss: There are 3 stationary defense bases that shoot laser bolts at you at very high speed. These bases are protected by shields. So here's my strategy: shoot at the middle base first while avoiding the incoming enemies and the bolts from the base guns. It will take a while to get rid off the shield, but once the shield is gone, the base will go boom very quickly. Then I did the same thing to the one on the left, then right.

Third boss: You need to keep shooting the shields which means for a while there might not be anything happening. But when you break the shields, killing the boss is quite easy.

Forth boss: Before the boss appears, make sure you pick up as many power ups as you can, cause you are going to need every ounce. Fly to the side of the boss ship to avoid its laser bolts. These bolts are not only fast but they can also trace your movements. As you fly from one side of the boss to the other, unload as many shots as you can at the center of the boss. You don't have to fight the small incoming enemy ships. Since they have a certain formation, you can just fly around them.

Cheat Codes:
The only reason I'm listing the cheat codes here is because I don't want you to miss out on the whole experience playing this game. It'll be more fun if you keep trying to beat the game on your own, because once you turn the cheat codes on you won't be able to save your high score!

When you launch the game you will see a dog image for a couple of seconds, press Up, Left, Up, Down on you directional pad for invincibility before the image disappears. It will beep if the game accepts the code; otherwise the code is not turned on. After the beep, you will have another couple of seconds to enter a second code if you wish. Press Down, Left, Right, Down to unlock all levels.

Graphics I'd given Blaster 6 dragons for its graphics if I could. It's a shame that this game's developers aren't working for Lucas Arts. The graphics belong in Star Wars movies! The alien aircraft are the most intriguing creation I've ever seen in this kind of game.
Sound The alien aircraft move in the rhythm of the music as if they were a group of dancers. You will find yourself moving you stylus along with the music in a most graceful manner.
Fun Meter Four long levels of nonstop action. Each level has its own theme and type of enemies. After you finish the four levels, the game rewards you with an extra timed play where it unloads an unbelievable number of enemies in an incredible speed. You will have only one goal: to survive.
Addictivity Once I started the game I couldn't stop playing. Not only did the game become more and more challenging, but more intriguing. I was so curious to find out what other types of alien ships I'd encounter next, what they would look like, what kind of formation and movements they would have.
