JadeDragon's reviews and playing tips: Palm OS games

Marcel Desailly Pro Soccer by Gameloft, Price: $18.95
Reviewed March 2003

If you are a big soccer fan looking for a quick fix, then pick up Marcel Desailly Pro Soccer for Palm OS. Even if you don’t wear Chelsea’s color, worry not! You’ve got over 30 national teams to choose from. Developed by Gameloft, MDPS can deliver short yet intense soccer games to the palm of your hand.

You won’t see the finesse in passing or beautiful footwork of international star Soccer players in this top view game. What you will see in Marcel Desailly Pro Soccer is a fast pace and power shooting. There are various ways you can control the game, ranging from doing everything manually to using auto-play. The hardware buttons on the PDA are mapped to Turn Left, Turn Right, Power Pass, Pass/Change Player and Shoot/Tackle. It feels very smooth using the control buttons on the Palm.

Marcel Desailly Pro Soccer provides players with three compete modes and two skill-training modes. The competing formats include Exhibition, Cup and League where two skill modes include Penalty shot training and field training. Field training is a perfect way to get used to the controls, and Penalty shots are just pure fun whether you like to play the entire game or just perfect this specific skill. In the competition games, you get to choose the teams and see each player’s stats meter in Attack, Defense, Speed, Reaction, Precision and Power. In the Exhibition games you can pair up your favorite duel, while the Cup and League games, you will be paired up with the usual rivals. You do have choice of difficulty levels and the AI reflects it pretty well.

The graphics are quite sharp even with top view of the Soccer field and players look quite small. There are some animations to indicate special effects like power shots or landing zone, as well as player’s movements. You will enjoy the stadium atmosphere with large audience background, photographer on the sidelines along with bench areas.

There are quite a few midi sound clips throughout the game. It doesn’t seem to support the Clié hi res polyphonic sound on the NX or NZ. The game supports all color Palm OS devices including OS 5 devices. The game developer does advise you to use a minimum of Palm m505.

If you want to see your fancy slow motion overhead shot replay, go play something else. But if you want to display your quick reflexes, goal-shooting precision and attacking power, then step on the field of Marcel Desailly Pro Soccer! You will not be disappointed.

Playing Hint and Tips

Use the Training mode to perfect your button control. In the heat of match, you will be glad that you know where the buttons are.

Ratings (scale of 1 to 5):

Graphics It might not look groundbreaking, but the graphics look very sharp with various animations.
Sound Decent sound effects but no comparison to the original version.
Fun Meter Whether having all your favorite international teams available for a friendly match or fighting your way up to the top in competition, this game is a must have for soccer fans. The pace of the game could be slower with more time for finesse.
Addictivity Multiple game modes allow players to play a quick power game or a long drawn out tournament. The Penalty practice makes this game even more addictive.
