JadeDragon's reviews and playing tips: Palm OS and Pocket PC games

Kyle's Quest 2 (v1.45), Crimson Fire $20
Reviewed March 2002

Kyle's Quest 2 v1.4.5 is available for both Palm and Pocket PC. You buy the game engine from Crimson Fire and download the levels for free. There are other people developing new levels as well. (mostly free, some will charge.)

Who says the sequels are never better than the original? If you are KQ fan and have upgraded to a color handheld, KQ2 will exceed your expectations. Kyle's Quest game series are the first RPG (Roll-playing Game) I've found on Palm that look great. Like most of the RPG games, Kyle's Quest 2 is a game where you explore places on a world map, talk to the locals, battle monsters, and complete quests. What's better about this game than the RPG on Game Boy or PS2, is that it's really a game engine which means you can download more add on levels (the developers called them episodes) as they are rapidly released. So the game is virtually endless. Still not enough? Crimson Fire even gives you the SDK (software development kit) to create your own levels. Designing a new level is very easy and fast even if you don't have a lot of programming experience. Crimson Fire supplies you with the graphics (of characters, game items and etc.) and an application to compile your newly created episodes. Here's another bonus: let's face it! Would you want to play Golden Sun on a Game Boy Advance while riding a train to work in your business suits? Ah, the subtle and versatile PDA.

Playing Hints and Tips
Well, for a RPG game like this, you need a strategy guide, not hints and tips. But since we don't have pages of space here, I will just give you some advice to get you started. Spend your gold; buy the best weapon, armor and food/drink you can afford. As you defeat monsters or complete quests you will be rewarded with gold. You will pick up more things you can either use or sell. Don't save money, upgrade everything you can afford. Experiment with your Spells. Sometimes a spell can damage you. Pay attention to your stats when you use different spells. But I know that you will have questions like "how do I find the professor?" or "What do I do in the basement?" etc. I suggest that you use the discussion board to ask the questions. Hopefully someone who has played that game will give you an answer.

For you black & white PDA owners, the original Kyle's Quest will run in black and white.

Ratings (scale of 1 to 5):

Graphics The best rendered RPG graphics I've ever seen on a PDA.
Sound N/A I haven't found an episode with sound. Have you?
Fun Meter If you are a RPG fan, this is your game. Just knowing that there are going to be new levels coming out before you finish the current one will just get your heart pumping. Plus each level has its own style, look and feel.
Addictivity Being a RPG gamer at heart, I'm much happier now that I found this in color. But even in b&w it's darned addictive. With it's episodic set up, it's like a soap opera! I know I will be playing this game for a long time.
