Puzz-le, by Walter
Rawdanik, $9.95 (called
Enigma on the Pocket PC)
Reviewed August 2002
Puzz-le is based on the Vexed game with
a new graphic game interface. If you want to know more about
Vexed, read our review here. Puzz-le
has the same kind of game play, but with different bells
and whistles and style. Developed by Walter Rawdanik for
the Zaurus, Puzz-le offers 450 challenging levels in 10 different
puzzle packs.
The objective of the game is very simple:
match multiple similar pieces to make them disappear. You
clear the level when all the pieces are gone. The concept
is easy, but the game is very challenging. Inherited from
Vexed, Puzz-le picked the 10 most popular action packs for
this Linux edition. Children’s Pack is very easy for
children to play, Classic and Classic II are for the Vexed
vets, Confusion Pack is hard and tricky, Panic Pack and Impossible
Pack will require a lot of thinking, Twister Pack has some
twists and the Variety Packs have levels range from easy
to hard. The elevator and breakable brick elements add some
interesting twist to the game play.
While I liked the puzzle pack selection
in Puzz-le, I was delighted by the new styles of puzzle pieces
in this game. There are three graphic sets: gems, flags and
letters as well as some nice animations when the pieces disappear,
and fireworks at level end. The in-game shortcuts give you
quick access to Abort, Pause and Restart the level. The game
also lets you customize the puzzle to fit your level and
your taste by giving you 5 game speeds, enable/disable time/move
limit, a choice of puzzle piece styles along with 10 puzzle
packs. The game also comes with an instruction file as well
as sample levels that you can watch computer play.
Puzz-le is the only Vexed type of
game I could find on the Zaurus, but it’s not the
only reason I like it. The good selection of the classic
puzzle pack, creative puzzle piece design with easy to
use interface and flexible game settings make Puzz-le a
great choice for both adults and children. There are some
really cute sound effects as well.
