JadeDragon's reviews and playing tips: Palm OS games

Mahjongg by Astraware $14.95
Reviewed March 2002

I'm a Mahjong junkie; I will play anything that's remotely close to the game of Mahjong. Astraware developed their version of Mahjong for Palm and call it Mahjongg. Mahjongg comes with layouts like Pyramid, Castle, Cleopatra and Steps; and you can download more layouts, backgrounds and tile sets from their web site. The game also provides you with Hint Move, Shuffle the Tiles and Moves Available if you get stuck. Mahjongg shows creativity and good effort from Astraware, but fall short on nailing the graphics, which is an essential part of a Mahjong game, in my opinion. It surprised me because Astraware produced so many games with great graphic like Bejeweled and Zap!2000.

Playing Hints and Tips

Same for all Mahjong games, spread out your moves in all directions to open up more tiles. Experiment with all the layouts and find the ones that are more fun and challenging for you.

Ratings (scale of 1 to 5):

Graphics There are quite a few layouts and designs in this game, but in some of layouts it's hard to see where the edges of the layers are. There is a toggle the tile size function in the game that allows you to zoom in on certain part of a large layout like the Pyramid. But then you loose the view of the entire pile.
Sound The sound effects, compared to LandWare's Shanghai, are very minimal.
Fun Meter It's fun to explore many layouts, backgrounds and tile designs, though too many times the difficult to see graphics got in the way.
Addictivity Once you find the layouts and tiles, which you like and are easy to see, this game could be addictive.
