JadeDragon's reviews and playing tips: Palm OS and Pocket PC games

Solskia, by Crimson Fire $15
Reviewed April 2002

From the creator of Kyle's Quest, Solskia is another little RPG game by Crimson Fire. Solskia, for Pocket PC and Palm, follows standard RPG game design. You'll have dungeon fights, explore towns and villages, talk to people and take on quests, trade for the best weapons, and armor, etc. The game is set in medevil times where a warrior (you) is destined to protect people and fight evil. You need to talk to townsfolk, find out what quests they have for you then you go to the dungeons to explore and fight monsters. Along the way, you will collect gold and goodies, which you can trade them for weapons, armor, health items, stamina items, etc.

This game has beautiful graphics and great potential to be one of the best RPG games. But it literally falls short: the length of game is too short. It seems that Crimson Fire is trying to create another KQ type of game engine where people will create more levels for it. Solskia alone isn't a finished game yet, in my opinion, because it's much too short for an RPG.

Playing Hints and Tips

Like many RPG games, only a step-by-step walkthrough can really help you through the game. Read the game walkthrough in our "Games" discussion forum.

Ratings (scale of 1 to 5):

Graphics Superb graphics, beautiful design. Movements are smooth; images are sharp. There are occasional bugs in the graphics, like the health bar doesn't always show up or the character might disappear if you put him in a certain spot. It's also kind of dark on a Pocket PC.
Sound I almost thought there weren't any sound effects, but there are occasional sounds. I actually don't mind not having sound in a RPG game.
Fun Meter If you're a veteran RPG gamer, you'll find this game a short but sweet treat. Fighting is real time; you need to monitor the health, stamina, and mana levels while fighting. Quests are fun. The down time is a bit too long when you are trying to get from town to town.
Addictivity The addictive level would score much higher if this game were longer. It didn't take me long to finish it. Hopefully there will be more levels from Crimson Fire!
