For mobile phone users who love listening to music on the go, in the office or at home, having an excellent stereo headset is essential. These days phones with Bluetooth stereo A2DP support are quite common, so why not go wireless? The Nokia Bluetooth stereo headset BH-905 is currently the top dog for noise cancellation and full stereo sound in Nokia’s Bluetooth accessory collection. The Nokia BH-905 has excellent audio quality with full sound, clear channel separation and strong bass when working with mobile phones. It also has dual mic noise cancelling technology for voice calls, and multi-mic noise cancelling for music playback. The headset is very comfortable to wear and has an excellent build quality. Its only problem? It sounds terrible when working with computers.
The Nokia BH-905 Bluetooth stereo headset has a traditional headphone design with a sleek look. The headset has a sturdy black band with soft leather padding on top, and thick and soft ear pads that also do a good job of blocking ambient noise. The Nokia headset isn’t too large or heavy, and it’s very comfortable to wear. It’s easy to adjust the size of the overhead ring to fit different people. The headset earpieces have chrome covers with most controls on the right earpiece. The multi-function key turns on/off the headset, puts it in pairing mode and answers and ends calls. It lives on top of the right cover and shares space with track rewind and forward controls on the left and right respectively, and the music play/pause key on the bottom. The volume control rocker and the wired cable plug live on the side of the right earpiece, and the Active Noise Cancelling button and the charging port live on the side of the left earpiece. Leave ANC turned off when you don’t need it to conserve battery life. The tiny LED indicator light is on the bottom of the right earpiece next to the audio cable port.
Pairing and Features
The Nokia BH-905 has Bluetooth v2.1 + EDR and supports both mono Headset and Hands Free profiles and stereo A2DP and AVRCP. The headset supports multi-pairing and can work with 2 Bluetooth devices simultaneously. When the BH-905 is turned on for the first time it will go into pairing mode automatically. Use your Bluetooth phone to find and pair with the headset using the default pass code "0000". For subsequent pairing, turn the headset off, then press and hold the multi-function key until the LED flashes blue rapidly indicating the headset is ready to pair. We tested the Nokia BH-905 with several phones, desktop computers and laptops. It paired with all smoothly. If you need to use the headset with non-Bluetooth device, the Nokia BH-905 comes with a 3.5mm audio cable that can connect the headset with an AV device. In addition, the headset package also includes an airplane adapter, a 6.3mm home stereo adapter and a 2.5mm adapter.
The Nokia BH-905 can handle voice calls as well as music playback. The headset has a dual microphone for making voice calls. The multi-function key can receive, end and ignore calls as well as redial and voice dial based on the phone’s support for Hands Free features. For music playback, the headset offers track controls and volume adjustment. If you are listening to music in a very noisy place, slide the Active Noise Cancelling button on which will noticeably reduce the ambient noise.
Audio Quality and Range
The Nokia BH-905 had outstanding audio quality for music playback with most phones we tested including the iPhone 3GS, the HTC Imagio, the Motorola DROID and several feature phones as well as the Zune HD by Microsoft. Music tracks sounded full with clear channel separation, and tracks featuring strong bass really came through via the Nokia BH-905. We tested music in different genres including Rock, Classical, instrumental (acoustic guitar) and R&B, and found everything sounded very good. The headset is very effective at blocking out ambient noise thanks to the 8-mic noise cancelling set up and the thick ear pads, and the audio quality benefited from it. Volume is loud and should be good for those who really don’t mind giving their eardrums a work out.
While we were really impressed by the audio quality of the Nokia BH-905 when it’s working with phones, we were surprised by the subpar audio quality when we tested it with computers. We tested it with several HP laptops including the HP Envy 15 and the HP TouchSmart tx2 and an iMac, and the audio sounded tinny with very thin sound and no power to the bass.
The Bluetooth range between the headset and the devices and computers is average, reaching 10-15 feet before the audio starts to suffer interruptions. The Bluetooth range is a bit better when working with computers than cell phones, but not by much.
The Nokia BH-905 has a rechargeable Li-Ion Polymer battery that’s 600 mAh in capacity. The battery life is very good by Bluetooth headset standards, and you can always turn off the headset overnight and only turn on the ANC in very noisy environments to conserve battery power. The claimed talk time is 24 hours and music playback time is 25 hours with ANC turned off. With ANC turned on, the claimed talk time reduces drastically to 15 hours and music playback time to 16 hours. If you use the audio cable to connect the headset and your phones or devices, the Nokia BH-905 uses little or no power to operate with ANC off.
The Nokia BH-905 has the look of high-end stereo headphones and it sounds outstanding with mobile phones. We like the comfy form, excellent ambient noise cancelling and we dig the generous bundle of adapters for the audio cable. The headset was easy to pair with all devices and computers in our tests and the battery had great performance. If you plan to use the headset primarily with mobile phones and MP3 players, you will love the Nokia BH-905. If you intend to use the headset with a computer, the Nokia BH-905 isn’t the best choice since audio quality is surprisingly poor with computers.
