PDA Case Reviews: HP iPAQ 1900 Series Cases Comparison: Cases for the 1910/1930/1940 Reviewed
By Jose Martinez, guest writer, June 2003

Recently I have had the privilege of trying out various cases from Vaja, Covertec, Piel Frama, EB, and HandheldPlanet for my HP 1910.  Here is the comparison review for the cases. (note: a summary table is located at the end of the article)

First I'd like to thank all the companies for supplying a demo of their cases for this review.  I'd also like to say that the order in which I reviewed each case was dictated by the order that I received them.  So nothing special about who's on first.

Vaja Case

The first case to arrive was the Vaja Case.  I consider this the Cadillac of all the cases I tried.  Not necessarily the best, but it definitely had all the bells and whistles that you'd expect from a top of the line company.

Options

The Vaja case offers the most customization of all the cases reviewed.  There's over 28 different color/leather type combinations with about anything else you could want in a case.  Here are the options the case I reviewed had.

  • Color - Vitelino Jean
  • 1 Credit Card and two SD slots
  • Slim Cover without cushioning
  • Matching leather lining
  • Cost - $98.90

Size and fit

One of the more important features I was looking for was a case that didn't add a lot of bulk to my PDA.  The Vaja case delivered here.  Coming in at a measured 4 5/8" long by 2 3/4" wide by 7/8" deep, this case didn't add much bulk at all.  And as you can see from the picture, this case also doesn't block the screen what-so-ever.  The fit was superb.

Leather quality and workmanship

This is where Vaja really shines.  I have to say that the quality of the leather for this case was higher than any of the others I reviewed.  The leather was nicely stained and all the stitching was without flaw.  The leather has a soft feel to it but at the same time is stiff enough to give protection.  It is just a beautiful case overall.  Vaja also puts a little metal logo tab on the front of the flip cover.  This doesn't add hardly any bulk but it definitely adds a touch of class.

Functionality

The main thing I was comparing here between the different cases was with the ease of use for all its buttons.  The buttons were a bit harder to get to here because of the thickness of the leather around the screen.  If you are an avid gamer, this may get annoying after a while.  The main problem I had with this case was getting to the power-off button.  The case is molded around the power-off button, but the case is too thick to allow you to use the button. I ended up downloading a program that allowed you to turn off the PDA with a touch on the screen, and I ended up turning it on with a button other than that power button.

The case was one of the few that had a cutout for the hard reset button. I thought this would have been a given for all designs, but unfortunately, this isn't so.  This case also had a cutout for the headphones.  Both holes were placed accurately and didn't get in the way of usage.

Summary

This is definitely at the top of the list for cases...but you're going to pay for it.  The Vaja case is by far the most expensive case if you customize it.  However, Vaja offers standard cases at a discounted price.  The packaging on this case is also at the top of the list.  It comes in a nice protective box and inside the box is a nice leather bag that your PDA case is inside of.  This is GREAT presentation...but you pay for it.

The closure mechanism on the Vaja case is a regular snap button.  Works pretty good.  Nothing stood out on this, so I guess that's good (i.e. if something would have been wrong, I would of noticed it!).

Piel Frama Case

The second case to arrive was the Piel Frama case.  This is another case that was very well received.

Options

The only option that Piel Frama offers is the color of the case.  They have black, tan, and black&tan.  This isn't necessarily a bad thing because the stock model is very well equipped (I feel like a car salesman saying that last line!).

  • Color - Black and Tan
  • Price - 60 euros (approximately $68.36)

Size and fit

The Piel Frama Case (PF Case) looked as if it was going to be another great sized case until I put it in my pocket. It felt much bigger than the Vaja case. The measurements come out at 4 7/8" long by 3" wide by 1 1/4" deep.  Noticeably bigger. The top of the screen was also blocked ever so slightly. Not enough to bother me, but it was enough to notice.

Leather quality and workmanship

I started to affectionately call my PF case my marshmallow case.  The case felt like a soft pillow.  The leather quality is top of the line.  The leather is a supple cow hide.  Very soft to the touch.  The case was assembled very professionally.  Another nice looking case...although it lacked a bit of elegance that the Vaja had shown (depending on who you are...this could be a plus or a minus).

Functionality

This case was probably the most functional case of them all when looking at ease of button use.  Because of the marshmallow effect mentioned earlier, the buttons are easy to get to and easy to use.  So gamers should like this case.

One downfall was that the PF case did not have a cutout for the hard reset button.  BUT I noticed that the leather is soft enough that you can make an indentation with the stylus on where the hole should be...then you can remove the case and make your own reset hole.  A little bit of surgery to make the case fully functional:)  There is however a cutout for the headphones.  This hole is lined up accurately and doesn't get in the way of usage.

Summary

I didn't like this case as much as the Vaja solely because of its size.  I keep my PDA in my front right pocket and this was the largest of the PDA cases I reviewed.  However, if you keep the case in a purse, or a jacket, or on your belt (it comes with a detachable belt clip) then this wouldn't be nearly as important.  The quality and feel of the case was almost on par with the Vaja case, but being that this case is a bit cheaper, it may be a good alternative.  The case is packaged in a nice box with a couple PF cards inserted.  I believe I prefer this package.  It's enough to make me feel that I spent my money on something nice but not too extravagant where I'd feel like I wasted my money all on packaging!

I really liked the closure mechanism on this case.  Instead of a snap button, there is a magnet at the end of the flip tab.  This allows for FAST opening and FAST closing of your case.  At first I didn't like it because I thought it wasn't going to protect my case if I dropped it.  But to my surprise, the magnet is strong enough (and because of how it's placed in the case) the closure is fairly secure.

Covertec Case

The third case to arrive was my Covertec Case.  This turned out to be my favorite case to use.  It's the one I use now that I've gone through them all.

Options

Red, Brown, or Black leather are the only options you can choose.

  • Color - Black
  • Price - $39.95

Size and fit

The Covertec case measured in at 4 7/8" long by 2 7/8" wide by 3/4" deep.  Not the smallest of the five reviewed, but managable.  The most noticeable difference between this case and the other four is how it fits around the screen.  There isn't a fit around the screen!  Covertec left off the leather so that there wouldn't be any interferance.

The left and right buttons again are a bit of a pain to get to, so gamer's may not enjoy this case as much as one of the others.

Leather quality and workmanship

Leather quality is very good for this case.  I'd say, it's middle of the line with Vaja and Piel Frama being higher quality leather.  The workmanship is really nice.  Everything is in place and all the stitches are good.  This is a bit more important for this case because Covertec uses white stitches on black leather, so if something was wrong, it would jump out at you.

Functionality

This case is really nice to use because of how it's designed.  The leather is there to hold the pda in place and to protect it, but it doesn't get in the way.  Very nice.  The extreme left and extreme right button is somewhat difficult to get to though.  Covertec also failed to put a hard reset hole on the side. One downfall though is that because this case lacks siding, it wouldn't protect your pda nearly as much as one of the other cases.

Summary

I love this case.  It's reasonably priced, functional, and it looks good.  What more can I say?

Another nice touch that Covertec has is a combination of a snap and a magnet.  The closure mechanism is a small snap that when you put it into the female piece, snaps into place.  But the force holding it there is from the magnet.  Nicely done!
