PDA Case Reviews: Battle of the PDA cases: HP 1910 Cases Reviewed (Page 2)
By Jose Martinez, guest writer, June 2003

EB Slipper Case

The fourth case in line was a nicely priced and nicely designed flip top.  Read on!

Options

The only option that EB offers is whether or not you wish to have a belt clip.  But even with the lack of options, I really liked this case.

  • No Belt Clip.
  • Price - $36.95

Size and Fit

The EB case was the smallest case coming in at 4 5/8" long by 2 3/4" wide by 7/8" deep.  Even though these are the same measurements as the Vaja case, the difference is in the closing mechanism (to be discussed later).  The fit is great for this case.  The screen isn't blocked what-so-ever and the saying "fits like a glove" just seems to fit the EB Slipper.  I have to say the fit for this case is the best of all five cases reviewed!

Leather quality and workmanship

This case surprised me because of it's cost.  I expected to not like it nearly as much as some of the others I reviewed.  I was wrong.  The leather is a supple black leather and it's assembled very nicely (remember the best fit comment).  EB also has a metal logo on the front flip cover just as the Vaja case has.  Again, I think this adds a nice touch of class  Great job EB!

Functionality

I'm afraid this is where the slipper case gets some mixed reviews.  First the closure mechanism.  The EB case has a magnetic closure system, but unlike the other two mentioned, the magnets here are on the front flip cover and on the face of the cover instead of on a flip tab.  This has both benefits and downfalls.  First, because of not having a flip tab, this case feels smaller than any of the other cases (although it has the same overall dimensions as the vaja).  The downfall is in the functionality of the buttons.  Because the magnets in the face are directly to the left and right of buttons 1 and 4, it adds a lot of bulk.  Those two buttons (the extreme left and extreme right buttons) are very difficult to get to.  So, as a gamer, this is a major negative.  But if you aren't a gamer...then this really isn't that big of a deal.

This case also does NOT have a hard reset button hole.  But just like I mentioned earlier, making your own would not be that hard with this case.  There is a headphone jack cutout though.  This again is accurately placed and doesn't get in the way of your headphone plug.

One nice touch the EB thought of was to put the SD slots inside the flip cover.  So when you have SD cards in the slots, you can't see them.  This is for extra protection of your PDA screen.

Summary

It was difficult to stop using this case when it was time to start reviewing the next in line.  I really liked it.  The size was great, the price is definitely right and the magnetic closure I believe is the best closure mechanism of all five cases.  The only downfalls are 1) lack of color options and 2)buttons are hard to reach.  The packaging for this case is merely a plastic case there you can hang in stores.  EB decided to save on packaging and pass some savings to us.

HandheldPlanet Case

The last of the cases to arrive for review!

Options

HandheldPlanet (HHP) had a few more options than the last few cases I reviewed.  The colors offered are Smooth Black, Supple Cognac, Black Ostrich, and Cognac Ostrich.  You can also order the case with or without a belt clip.

  • Color - Black
  • Belt Clip
  • Price - $29.95
Size and Fit

This case measured surprisingly larger than some of the other cases.  The case measured in at 4 3/4" long by 2 3/4" wide by 1" deep.  I say surprisingly larger because of the lack of material on the case.  From the front the case looks like most of the other's, but when turned over it cover's the least of all the cases.  This one of the two cases that does have a hole for the reset button.  Yay HHP!  And it does have a headphones jack cutout as well....BUT this case is the only one that the headphone cutout isn't centered on the pda's headphone hole.

Leather quality and workmanship

I heard a LOT of good things about this case before I received mine.  So I was surprised when I received it.  It's not that the case was poorly made or had bad quality leather.  It's just that the leather and the workmanship is not on par with the other four cases.  The leather is hard and stiff, the holes are not where they should be (see above) and although the leather doesn't block the screen...the outline isn't parallel with the screen. Oh well.

Functionality

For the amount of leather (or lack of leather) it's again surprising at how difficult it is to get to the buttons.  The outline of the leather doesn't lay flat.  It sort of rolls to the outside of the case (which is also partly the reason why it isn't parallel).  And because the leather rolls, it makes it hard to get to the buttons.  The power button isn't easy to get to either.

Summary

This case was the lowest priced of them all.  And if you want to save a few bucks go for it...  But I can't recommend this one. Sorry.

The closure mechanism is another snap button.  The female connection to the closure mechanism wasn't centered on the leather (the picture doesn't do this justice...the female connection isn't centered but not to the extent that the picture shows!)

Summary Table

As an engineer, I like tables.  One philosophy is "why read through all this when I can get the summary on a nice small table".  Well, here's the table for folks like me!  The shaded area is the best reviewed for each item.

Smallest case, no flip tab for closure mech, great price. Get this if you want to save $7 and not get the EB slipper.
