To be honest, I have not used the J2 myself, but a few possibilities come to mind:
1. The headset might be a little too far from the phone
2. The headset's battery might be low
3. The headset might be applying some sort of DSP/ambient noise reduction algorithm that has gone awry (I'm not sure if you can make any adjustments to that feature with the equipment you're using).
4. You might've just gotten a bad unit. (Can you try the headset with other phones, or other headsets with your phone?)
