I know that the service will be free, but there are/will be times when the service isn't 100% functional, also add to it that we don't know how well it will preform when millions of people are playing the same game. In addition X-Box has the ability to network multiplayer games that don't have the ability to do multiplier via Live. With such setups like VPN, this comes in handy.
