Today I will show you my top 10 Free apps for your BlackBerry smartphone. I have the Blackberry Bold, but these apps should work on most current BlackBerry smartphones. I have included OTA* links for your enjoyment.
1.Google Maps m.google.com/maps
Most new blackberries are equiped with GPS Navigation for either turn by turn directions, finding out your location or looking up where to get the best pizza in town!
Now Google maps doesn't give you turn by turn voice guided directions but it allows you to find your location, find directions and look up the number to your local Starbucks.
Don't worry if your BlackBerry doesn't have GPS, Google maps will find your location of the nearest cellphone tower and give your approximate location within a few meters.
2.Blackberry App World www.blackberry.com/appworld/
Much like Apples app store, BlackBerry app world has tons of free and paid apps , which you can try or buy! On the front page you'll get a run down of the top 13 applications , a price if applicable and a rating system of 0-5 stars(0 being the worse and 5 being perfect). You will need the app store application to gain access to the other applications I mention later in this article.
3.Pandora Radio (Blackberry App Store) http://www.pandora.com/blackberry
Pandora radio is a streaming radio station that is controlled by YOU the user. Want that boom boom of Paul Van Dyk? That classical piece from Beethoven? A rock ballad from twisted sister? It's yours with a few keystrokes and the press of a button. I highly recommend using Pandora over W-Fi or 3G for both quality and being able to hold a solid connection to the server. With Pandora you can create music stations according to the music you like, either by artists song or genre and then will play similar artists. You can refine your playlist further by picking certain bands you want to listen to and it will pick songs from those said artists.
4.AOL instant Messenger
The king of messengers, pretty much everyone uses aol to message there friends, colleagues and family. From across the pond to Timbuktu you can message anyone, all you have to do is add there screenname. AOL instant messenger is available through the blackberry app store as well.
A Twitter client for the BlackBerry, Twitter is more or less a status update like Facebook telling your friends or the world through a "tweet"(A tweet is a post or status update). Twitter is also used as a blogging service for many people from cell phone providers to actors to the average person ranting and raving about how much gas costs? (Don't remind me ). In order to use twitter berry you must Twitter also allows you to follow your favourite celebrity, friend or company just add them to your friends and you will get there tweets. Overall Ubertwitter is very easy to use, you can tweet you friends, add a picture to your tweet and retweet all to your hearts content. The ?berTwitter client supports BlackBerry devices running 4.2.1, 4.3, 4.5, 4.6, and 4.7.(Pretty Much all Berries)
6.Myspace http://www.myspace.com/blackberry or use the app world.
A social web page where you can have your own dedicate page to yourself and for the world to see! Add friends, celebrities, bands you name it. Myspace on your BlackBerry is just like using Myspace on your computer, view status updates and upload a photo to your Myspace page. I mostly use Myspace to add my favourite bands to see where they're touring, if they have new CDs coming out etc. I have a few friends spread across the world I talk to every now and again. Myspace for BlackBerry is very easy to use and mimics the PC counterpart very well.
Much like its counter-part Myspace back in the day Facebook was ONLY for college students to connect to other students within the school. Luckily for Facebook it must have realized Myspace was taking a large amount of its users and opened it up for everyone. Different from myspace, Facebook is much more cleaner and less flashier than its rival allowing me to not have an aneurysm when looking at peoples pages. (I swear some Myspace pages go overboard flashy banners artwork everywhere.) In this case less is more, you get a picture of your friend, their status updates (basically what there doing currently), a few tabs with there pictures, info, video and more. I like Facebook for its simplicity and ease of use whether it's to write on someones wall (leave a message) or poke them (Kind of like saying hi).
8.Weather Eye http://weyebb.pelmorex.com/BlackBerry/
It tells the weather in your area! The cool thing is it leaves an icon on your Berry that changes according to the weather. Very, very cool! Not much to comment on it but I find it accurate and fun to use. The only thing that this doesn't have is radar images but I rarely look at that.
9.Opera Mini 5 www.mini.opera.com
Opera mini is a browser for your Berry that re-creates the desktop experience when it comes to viewing mobile web sites on your handheld. The standard BlackBerry browser doesn't look like this! You can load full web sites instead of its mobile cousins, pan zoom and use a mouse to zoom in on the things you want to read. It also comes with its own search bar so you can put in the direct URL to the web site you want to go to. Great web experience on the BlackBerry......(Until Skyfire comes out, Skyfire allows you to load full websites AND supports flash. (Hulu anyone?)
10.New York Times http://mobile.nytimes.com/bbinstall.
I don't like Newsday or the Dailyews. I don't find them as accurate as New York Times. With Mobile New York Times you can read business, technology and sports as well as stocks and weather.
* Please note that you MUST have a data plan to download anything or Wi-Fi on your device. Otherwise your bill will be HUUUUUGE especially with streaming that pandora!
*OTA over the air allows you to download applications over the internet without having to sync your berry up to your computer. You must use the native blackberry browser for ota.
