There is no proximity sensor but yes, there is a light sensor that's used only to set display brightness. Once the display timeout triggers the screen is locked (you can set this, the default is 15 seconds). The buttons are not locked however (nor are they on most phones).

It runs Android OS 1.5 Cupcake.
