iPad Game Review: Warpgate HD
Reviewed by Shaun Price
Warpgate HD took me totally by surprise, as it plays like no other space trader I've played before. Warpgate HD is no MMO, but having the ability to seamlessly move between and explore dozens of galaxies filled with planets and enemies of all varieties will make any hardcore gamer say "wow".
When you start Warpgate HD for the first time you're greeted with the tutorial system. This takes about half an hour to complete and walks you through every aspect of the game, including commodity trading, the ins and outs of galactic politics and faction relations, and combat. At any time you can go back and replay part of the tutorial from the pause menu.
Adventure mode is the only gameplay mode in Warpgate HD. After the tutorial, you are thrown into a galaxy to put your skills to the test almost immediately when a pirate ship attacks another captain. From here begins a story where you must help out warring factions. You start as a mining vessel asked by the N.S.E (Nation States of Earth) to investigate a planet. Then you are thrown into a space battle with a few pirates. As you battle through several different systems and planets to complete your missions, you find out who is funding and behind the attacks. The gameplay is very expansive: a vast galaxy of more than 35 star-systems that could be explored in more than 172 different starships. Even after you?ve completed the main story there are still yet an endless number of side quests that you can complete all the while you can spend your hard earned money the vast assortment of weapons and shield upgrades for your starship.
The combat system is very clunky and non-responsive at times. The use of the altimeter could be utilized a lot better than how it is now. There is an option that allows you to turn off the altimeter in combat. Fortunately, the touch controls to move the ship around the map from planet to plant are very accurate and amazingly responsive.
There is no multiplayer for Warpgate HD. The developers instead incorporated plus+ that has achievements to obtain and recognition on the Leaderboards. There is a total of seven different Leaderboards such as ?Total Money Acquired?, ?Total Pirate Ships Killed?, and ?Total Tons of Commodities Traded? In addition, and there are 18 different achievements you can acquire. ?Excavator? which is given to you if 20 asteroids are minded also the ?Inspector? achievement that is awarded if 50 ships, planets or asteroids are scanned.
Warpgate HD has very detailed, robust, and stunning graphics. I applaud the execution and the implementation that was put into each planet, ship, and landscape of the game. The ability to zoom into the ships to see the detail then to zoom out to see the entire star system is absolutely brilliant.
The background music can get very easily repetitive and just plain boring sometime. You could however turn off the background music and leave the sound FX. The sound FX for Warpgate HD is right on the nose. The sound of the flying spaceships or attacking pirates immerses right into the game, helping create the full effects that draw the players in.
Warpgate HD is absolutely amazing. If you want a game as close to Star Trek as you can get on a portable gaming machine, you have found a winner. With 100 main missions and endless number of side quests, your money is well spent and beyond. Even though non-sci-fi fans might not dig the experience as much as a true space junkie might from the game, Wargate HD is still a fun game that utilizes the iPad well.
