iPhone Game Review: Hector: Badge of Carnage
Reviewed by SpaZtrigger
Stagger a drunken mile through the Crime Capitol of Britain in the size 9s of Detective Inspector Hector: part criminalist, part kebab-fiend, all cop.
With 2,421 spoken lines of dialogue Hector: BOC feels just like a movie. Except it's interactive.
Hector: Badge of Carnage is one of those interactive graphic stories where you find clues and help move the plot along. But Hector adds a little to the traditional formula: Hector: Badge of Carnage includes an amazing amount of voice acting. Like all interactive games, Hector has only one game mode, story mode. You wake up in a musty old cell and you must find your way out by searching for the right items. After finding some items you must examine, combine, or use those items to progress in the game.
Items you find are varied and what you need to do with them are creative. In one place you must obtain a breath mint and give it to the punks that hang out in the park, then you get spray paint, so on. The game has massive number of characters by graphical novel standards and each one of them has his own personalities and funny dialogue. Locations are seedy, perfectly fitting the story. All of that pales in comparison to the puzzle you have to solve in order to move the story line and satisfy your own curiosity. To solve the puzzles, you have to pick the right item or say the right thing to the police commander. If you get lucky and got everything right, the game offers you reward, like the terrorist fund jar; but if you mess up you will suffer the consequences dearly.
The down and dirty (in very which way) style and story line aren?t for young children under the age of 17. For adult players though, the game is funny, mind bending and has its own style. Like a good book, readers don?t want to read the similar stories every time, and Hector certain is unique in providing its own story. The voice action is awesome and very enjoyable even though everyone in the game is voiced by the same person. The point and click control works smoothly on the iPhone and iPod touch.
Hector: BOC has amazing cartoon style graphics. In fact it almost feels like an animated film! It kind of resembles Family Guy, and it?s one of the best 2D graphics games out there. While the graphics style and illustrations are superb, the game does have some bugs still need to be ironed out: one time I entered the park and Hector didn't appear so I had to close the app and restart it to place the main character in the story.
Controls aren't that complicated. You tap an item once to look at it. Then you double tap to go to and examine the item. Your item then goes to the inventory. From there you can combine or use your items. The controls are great! No glitch and very easy to use.
It?s no uncommon to hear some voice acting in an adventure interactive game, but Hector: BOC puts in an unbelievable amount of voice acting. In fact every single line in Hector: BOC is voiced! Music is also epic and varied in Hector: BOC. Every single location has its own music, all sounding epic. Did I mention there are 18 different locations and 23 characters, each with their own voices? Amazingly each piece of music goes really well with their surroundings. Apparently the developers are certain that you will like the music and voice as the game doesn?t allow iPod music to play. This isn?t necessarily a bad thing: first of all the BGM is excellent and helps create the mood for the game; second, you will need to hear the non-stop voice dubbing. With full compliments from the audio department, Hector feels more like a movie, and who would want to listen to their iPod while watching a movie?
Hector: Badge of Carnage has amazing gameplay, superb 2-D graphics, and outstanding sounds. The puzzles are hard to solve at times, and you might have to think about for a while to see the truth behind the surface. Don?t cheat and look for answers because getting stuck and working your way out is the best part of the gameplay. If you do cheat and have answers for every puzzle, the game can go really fast.
