iPhone Game Review: Silverfish
Reviewed by ninjackid
Ok, let's face it. We've all seen those creepy little pests known as silverfish in our basements, attics, bookshelves and whatnot. Most of us see them as disgusting, annoying and want them to stay away from our place of abode. But this latest action arcade title from Chaotic Box just might change how we think about Silverfish...
Silverfish by Chaotic Box is an arena survival game that has a simple gameplay. In fact, there's not much to say about the gameplay since it's so simple, and that's definitely not a bad thing. The game features three game modes: Scavenger, Reaper and Onslaught. The main element to those three gameplay modes is similar in all three, which is to avoid enemies and collect Power pods to kill those enemies, and basically stay alive, either by not losing lives in Onslaught, or by keeping your POW bar up by killing other enemies and collection protons in Scavenger, and even by eating your enemies when your pow bar reaches 100% in Reaper mode.
Controlling the Silverfish is easy, works very well and quick to learn. Silverfish does away with messy virtual controls and you simply control the little guy by swiping the screen with one finger in the direction you want it to go and tapping the screen with two fingers to drop a bomb. Power pods explode when you run into them, destroying the enemies around and leaving protons to increase your score. While this does work great, the developer has promised to update the game with more control schemes in the future.
So what makes Silverfish stand out from other survival games? It just has that great simple pick-up-and-play appeal that will keep you coming back for more with adrenaline pumping action that ramps up quickly. It's just simple and extremely addictive fun just to try and survive as long as you can.
Graphics & Sound
The graphics in Silverfish havea great bright neon style that pop up out of the screen. The backgrounds and explosions are done exceptionally well. The silverfish and protons look sharp and colorful. You will enjoy the fireworks when things start to pop like firecrackers have been set off.
The sound is also done very well with a great arcade soundtrack and it just fits in so well with the whole theme. There is also plenty of sound effects to enjoy in the game. If you are a DIY kind of player when it comes to sound in gaming, Silverfish offers iPod music option.
Silverfish makes for a great and unique pick-up-and-play arcade title with its simple yet addictive gameplay. The game has some unique elements that make it feel almost like a shooter. If you are looking for a survival game that has an interesting idea, great graphics and endless replay value, Silverfish offers enough in each category that sets itself apart from other average survival games. It should be a unique addition to any gamer's collection.
