iPad Game Review: World of Goo HD
Reviewed by Abisco / Abbass-Ali Siwjee
2D Boy, the developers of World of Goo have truly had a rough time. After releasing World of Goo, a puzzle building game with loads of personality for the Wii and PC/Mac, it won over 20 awards, and racked up a LOT of raving reviews. But things got itchy when their company almost went down after having their game pirated too much. Thankfully the game is back, and better then ever on the iPad. This may be one of the very few console games we can safely say, work even better on the iPad than any other system before!
World of Goo is really a game about building. You have these guys name ? well, GOO! And your job is to get them from point A, to point B. How do you do this? You just grab one of the gooey little guys and start making structures out of them. It really is such an intuitive experience on the iPad it is crazy. You really feel like you are a master builder, and with the little sound effects and awesome building mechanics, it?s easy to get immersed in the game. I don?t want to give too much away about the cool twisted story (it is kind of SECOND thought, but it is interesting and takes some cool turns).
Included also is a lot of variety, and the characters really come to life with their facial expressions and very interesting backgrounds. Overall, this is the best way to experience an already amazing game, it just feels NATURAL using your fingers to grab to Goo and construct some really intricate structures.
The game will take you a good 6 ? 8 hours, and also included are OCD challenges, special challenges that are harder to complete for each level, such as using as little balls as possible, or beating a certain time. On top of all this, for every ball you don?t use in each level, the ball gets sent to the World of Goo Corp., where you try to build the highest tower you can. Everyone else?s towers heights are illustrated by clouds via Game Center, so it?s really fun to try and just beat others in tower building.
The game has some really stylized graphics, and a very interesting 2D design. Everything is quirky and weird, but it?s easily identifiable as being a part of World of Goo, since everything is so weird already. It really is a wonder though to see what?s behind the next bend, what new thing you will discover and how your actions will change the world. I also just got to send out a great big KUDOS to the art director for the awesome cut scenes, they just have so much personality, its hard to not just fall in love with the art design in every single way.
There was one point during this game, where I started a level and was greeted by some really haunting music, it was some of the best video game music I had ever heard, and pretty much sums up the sound section of this review. The music is nothing short of epic. It really is sweeping and is one of the best parts of this game, and this game is already an awesome package.
All in all, you really are getting a lot of Bang for your Buck with World of Goo HD. It has a really long campaign (by iOS standards), is a lot of fun, and the iPad is easily the best platform to play on.
Ratings (scale of 1 to 5):

Sound: - 5 - The soundtrack is just epic, and the sound effects pouring out of every little seam of the game really just convince you that this is a TRUE console game
Controls: - 5 - Controls are just perfect, grabbing a little dude and pulling him away to build a structure just couldn?t work better anywhere other then the iPad
Gameplay: - 5 - This is truly an amazing game. If you have an iPad, then you need this on it, it truly showcases what the iPad is capable of, and is just a lot of fun.
Playing Hints and Tips:
You have the ability to skip any level you want in the menu if you find it too hard, so if you ever feel frustrated then be sure to do that! This game has a lot to discover, and clicking the ?Painter?s? signs are a lot of fun to read, so be sure to read every single one you find! They are absolutely hilarious!
