iPad Game Review: Quantum Legacy HD (Universal) Review
Reviewed by Tom Slayton
Quantum Legacy HD is a space-based shooter on "rails." It features razor sharp graphics and simple 2-button controls.
Quantum Legacy HD is a space shooter on rails. If you're not familiar with this term, it is often used to describe 1st or 3rd person shooters where you control your weapons but not your movement. Based on this description, Q-Legacy is really more of a soft rails shooter in that you tilt your device to control your ship while dogfighting, but you don't have any control over what happens between battles. Once battle commences, your fate rides on your ability to manage weapons and shields, both of which are controlled by one button each. Tilt to steer, right thumb to fire, and left thumb to shield. The art here is the ability to time your shots to hit your opponent while he is not shielded, and to prevent him from doing the same to you.
Both guns and shields activate only for a moment, and can overheat if you use them too much. Further, you cannot fire while you are shielded so you must often make hard choices in order to give more damage than you receive. For an even more straightforward experience, simply tap your enemy to engage autopilot, and focus all your attention of just your weapons and shields. I found the controls to be very intuitive so don't expect much of an interface learning curve here. This isn't to say that the game itself is easy to master, however.
Q-Legacy offers 20 different campaign missions, with hours and hours of gameplay. Additionally, you will have the opportunity to pilot 4 different ship types, each with 16 levels of weapon and shield upgrades. Lastly, it features Game Center Leaderboards and Achievements to keep you coming back long after you've saved the galaxy. Quantum Legacy HD is good at what it does; the only real question is: do you enjoy these types of games? If you prefer your space games open-ended with free-form exploration, extensive ship customization, and trading, you should probably look elsewhere. However, if you're looking for a good shooter with lots of polish and accessible gameplay, Quantum Legacy may be exactly what you're looking for.
The graphics of Quantum Legacy HD are top-notch. Although the iPhone 5 isn't yet natively supported, QL HD does support retina resolutions on the iPhone 4/4S, iPod Touch 4, and the new iPad. The animation is silky smooth and load times are nonexistent.
Quantum Legacy HD features an excellent original soundtrack, solid sound effects, and surprisingly professional voice-acting. This last feature really pumps up the immersion factor, and helps to keep you interested in the story as it unfolds around you.
In-App Purchases (IAPs)
Quantum Legacy HD is a complete game, with no IAPs of any kind.
Quantum Legacy HD is a graphically rich space shooter on rails. If you like your space combat bite-sized but challenging, this may be exactly what you are looking for. If you prefer more of an open-ended experience, however, look elsewhere.
Ratings (scale of 1 to 5):
Graphics: - 4 - Very good retina-enabled graphics.
Sound: - 4 - Good soundtrack, good sound effects, and very good voice-acting.
Controls: - 4 - Two button interface makes this game very accessible and straightforward.
Gameplay: - 3 - This is a shooter on-rails, and as such, may not be for everybody.
Playing Hints and Tips:
It's often better to focus on incoming fire rather than the enemy ship; Shield when you must, and shoot when you can. Follow this formula, and you will inevitably give more damage than you receive. This strategy breaks down a bit when the more exotic weapons come available. Don't be afraid to experiment. Playing through the campaign a second time will net some fairly challenging achievements so if you enjoyed the game, a second playthrough may be just the thing.
