The Truffol cases for the iPhone 5 and iPhone 5s are uniquely designed cases with aluminum frame cut to fit the phone with a slim profile and a very sleek look. The Truffol cases currently are available with three styles for the back: stainless steel back, Italian leather back and wood/bamboo back. We look at the Truffol Signature Nature Case for iPhone 5/5s which has wooden backs.
The look and feel of the Truffol Signature Nature Case for iPhone 5/5s speak quality of material and precision in machining. The aluminum frame is nylon brushed for its silky smooth surface, and it fits the iPhone 5s like a glove. Though it's machine-cut to a form fitting, the frame has some flexibility and it's not difficulty to install it onto the iPhone 5s. The Truffol case has an interesting design when it comes to protecting the buttons on the iPhone 5/5s: the case covers the top power button and the side volume buttons like most other cases with its own raised buttons, but it goes one step further with the silence button. Most cases leave it out so that you can use the silence slider on the phone directly, but the Truffol seeks to protect the slider as well by giving you a small slider button. The tricky part here is that the slider button on the case doesn't get taped down like the other buttons, instead it comes separately in the box. It takes some finesse to get it installed with the case, but it's not super hard to do either. Just follow the instructions included with the case.
The back of the Truffol Signature Nature Case for iPhone 5/5s comes in a separate box and it has small clips that can latch onto the gaps in the frame when you install the back. It's quite easy to slide the back on and off. The aluminum frame comes in anodized Navy, Silver and Black to match your black or white iPhone's front colors while the back comes in different materials and colors. In the Minimalist series, you get stainless steel back with rubber coating. In the Classic series, you get small-grained Italian leather that comes in black, blue, red and orange colors. If you prefer a more "natural" look on your case, the Nature series comes in four wooden backs including walnut (pictured here), bamboo, cherry wood and black bamboo. The wooden back on the walnut version is smooth with natural wood grain showing. The case maker has also announced a future version that's made with 16-karat PVD Rose Gold that might match your gold iPhone 5s better.
To make the entire package more appealing, the Truffol cases all come in two boxes, one containing the aluminum frame and the slider button, and the other containing the back. The precise cut of the case, the high-end materials and the gift box packaging make the Truffol case one of the best looking case we've seen.
The beautiful aluminum case however proves to be its downfall as well. Though the case has a thin layer of plastic insert on the interior of the frame, it interferes with the cell reception very noticeably. If you're in a very strong coverage area you'll see 1-2 bars of degradation on your iPhone 5s, if you're in a mid or weak coverage area, you might lose the signal entirely and experience drop calls. So before you buy the Truffol case, be sure to check the reception on your iPhone 5s in all the areas you frequently make calls.
The Truffol Signature Nature Case for iPhone 5/5s is tightly cut around ports including the Lightning port and the 3.5mm audio jack. In our tests, only the charging/syncing cable Apple included with the iPhone 5s fitted through the cutout on the case, none of the other Lightning cables or Lightning connectors on our speakers, alarm clocks or docking stations could work with our iPhone 5s while in this case. The cut around the 3.5mm audio port is also tight. It allowed more headphone plugs to fit through the cut than just Apple's EarPods, but there were still a few that didn't fit in our tests.
The covered buttons work very well in this case and the slider button, though clumsy to install, works surprisingly well with the iPhone 5s' silence slider. The Truffol Signature Nature Case for iPhone 5/5s has a generous cutout for the rear camera and LED flash that lets the lens enjoy the full view and LED lights to fully illuminate.
The Truffol Signature Nature Case for iPhone 5/5s looks gorgeous and is made with good quality material. The styles of the case are carefully chosen and the design has a unique and modern look. We really wanted to love this case, especially the wooden back that looks great and feels nice, but we have to caution buyers on any case that interferes with your phone's reception and the Truffol interferes noticeably. The case's precise cuts make it look clean and attractive, but they also hinder the usage with certain accessories with Lightning connectors and 3.5mm audio plugs.
Price: $75 (Nature and Classic series); $60 (Minimalist series)
