Cheero Ingress Power Cube 12000mAh Battery Review

The Cheero Ingress Power Cube 12000mAh Battery is an officially licensed Ingress product that's a portable battery. While this reviewer isn't a stranger to game-themed merchandise, alas, Ingress isn't in my game repertoire. So this review is about the battery features more so than about the game and the collaboration between Cheero and Niantic Labs. The Cheero Ingress Power Cube 12000mAh Battery is one of the highest capacity portable batteries on the market. It has two USB charging port and can charge a phone and a tablet simultaneously.

Design

The Cheero Ingress Power Cube 12000mAh Battery is a large battery in both size and capacity. The battery measures 6.1 x 2.8 x 0.7 inches and it weighs 10.6 ounces. It's heavier than the IOGEAR GearPower 12,000 mAh battery but a bit lighter than the Anker 16,000 mAh. The Power Cube comes in a black plastic casing with a shiny cover for the Ingress-themed LED lights blinking in colors that represent the game's factions. The battery itself also has four white LED lights on the bottom right corner that indicate power levels. The two full USB power output ports and the micro USB recharging port live on end of the battery, and a power on/off button and the Ingress game LED lights on/off button live on the corner of another side of the battery.

Features

The Power Cube offers a 1A charging port and a 2.1A port. You can charge two smartphones or a smartphone and a tablet simultaneously. The battery can charge phones faster via its 2.1A port and as with all Cheero's batteries, the Power Cube 12000mAh has built-in overcharging, short-circuit and overheating protection. We tested the battery with a variety of phones and tablets and found that the efficiency rate isn't very high. For example, the battery could only charge the Nexus 6 with its 3220 mAh battery 1.7 times; and it filled the iPad Air 2's battery only up to 70%. In comparison, the IOGear's 12000mAh battery charged the iPad Air 2 1.5 times.

The Cheero Ingress Power Cube 12000mAh Battery comes with a USB charging cable and it takes about 10 hours to recharge the battery via AC power. The 44.4Wh Lithium Polymer battery has a 5V 1.6A input port and you can also recharge it via computer. The 4 white LED lights help you monitor the recharging status and power levels.

Conclusion

For the Ingress fans, the Cheero Ingress Power Cube 12000mAh Battery isn't just a portable battery that charges their smartphones and tablets but a show of brand loyalty and added entertainment. But for the rest of us, the Power Cube offers lots of power, two charging ports and a sleek looking form. The battery has decent charge time for both smartphones and tablets, and offers safety features as other Cheero products do. We wish the power conversion rate was higher and the recharging speed was faster.
