Belkin Travel RockStar Battery Pack + Charger + Surge Review

For frequent travelers who need to charge their laptops, tablets and smartphones; or those who prefer to get their work done in coffee houses rather than their offices, having limited numbers of AC outlets can become a problem. Luckily, devices like the Belkin Travel RockStar Battery Pack + Charger + Surge can expand one AC outlet into two AC outlets plus an additional USB charging port. The Belkin Travel RockStar offers two surge protected laptop charging outlets, one 2A USB charging port and built-in AC prongs. It also has a rechargeable 3000mAh battery built-in to provide extra power while you're away from any AC outlet.

Design

The Belkin Travel RockStar Battery Pack + Charger + Surge is a gray rectangular block with a white strip covering the top and one side where the ports and LEDs are. The Belkin Travel RockStar measures 5 x 2.66 x 1.6 inches and it weighs 10 ounces. The charger has two AC ports that are well spaced to accommodate even the largest laptop AC adapters. You'll find a small LED light that indicates surge protection next to the AC ports. On the side of the battery charger, you'll find the full size USB port along with 4 small LEDs that indicate the built-in battery level and a small push button to check the level. On the under side of the battery charger, you'll find the foldable prongs. The charger block has a matte hard plastic casing.

Features

The Belkin Travel RockStar Battery Pack + Charger + Surge offers two AC ports for charging laptops while protecting them from any power surges. The max output of the AC ports is 1,000W, which should cover laptops, tablets and other electronic gadgets, but not hair dryers or irons. When the surge protection is active, the small LED light labeled Protected lights up in green; and if that light goes out, it's likely that the internal surge protection board has sacrificed itself in a power surge, and you should get it replaced. The single USB charging port offers 2A max output and it can charge smartphones and tablets using the built-in 3000mAh battery. We tested it with several phones and tablets. It can charge the iPhone 6s from empty to full in 2.15 hours and top up the iPad Air 2 as well as other tablets.

To reduce the number of cables you must carry on the road, the Belkin Travel RockStar Battery Pack + Charger + Surge has a built-in AC adapter and it folds securely when not in use, and it has a stiff mount that keeps it steady when it's plugged into the AC outlet. The electrical rating for the AC adapter is 60Hz, 8.3A with max 1000W, and unfortunately for the International travellers, it only works with 120V AC. When the Belkin Travel RockStar is plugged into power, it can power two laptops, a mobile device as well as recharge its own battery.

Conclusion

We've all run into situations where we desperately needed to charge our devices but not enough AC outlets were available. The Belkin Travel RockStar Battery Pack + Charger + Surge can not only solve the problem but also, with its extra AC ports, make you a hero by offering the extra ports to others in need. The Belkin is an AC adapter, a phone/tablet charger and a portable battery, and it comes with its own AC prongs. We love the convenience this device offers and the built-in safety. The only thing that's disappointing is the 120V-only support, which alienates many International travelers.
