the new iphone3g can it be unlocked?

I've heard the rumors of people with other service providers getting iphones and they work through the data package there service has. I wanna know how much truth it is in that and is it a difficult process because I'm in the market for a new phone and at $199 it would be a steal to have!

Apple will not let you buy an iPhone 3G without activating it in the store. So even if you could find a way to unlock the phone technologically, you would still be stuck with a 2-year AT&T contract to fulfill.

When the "no commitment" version of the iPhone becomes available, it will cost substantially more than $199.

It would end up costing you $199 plus the $175 ETF fee that AT&T would charge you for ending your contract early. There's no way to escape that contract since Apple stores and AT&T are making you activate it in the store and start the contract.

It's certainly possible that the Jailbreak folks will figure out how to unlock it for use with other GSM providers sooner or later (probably sooner). So far, I believe they haven't claimed to crack the iPhone 3G, which uses a different bootloader than the original iPhone.

Thanks for the info! My other choice for a phone is the BlackBerry 8800(I get a good deal on it!) what do you all think of that one? I've had a sidekick for over 5 years so I'm spoiled with its Internet browser how does the blkbrry compare?

The BlackBerry has a better web browser than the SideKick.
