External Hard Drives
I have here a UX50. Proud but also upset due to the high prices of Memory Stick Pros. Though I have a 1 GB one but I also have many other things I like to fit in it. Now as you might know, the UX50's USB connection is set to "slave" (a more commonly used term for drives) so it cannot connect and control another "slave" drive. Since I use mostly BT and Wifi to do all the syncs and import, I have decided to get a local professional and try to change the USB connector on my UX to "master". However, before I do I seek advice from experts here on whether or not it will go through.

Only if you can get the Palm OS to understand USB host since it's built to support the USB client. Have not seen anything like that so far.

I agree with Tong. The Palm OS is very compact and wouldn't contain the code to do anything other than what it already does. Witness Softick's CardExport 2. This puts USB drivers onto the Palm to connect to the built-in Windows USB drivers, just as Sony's MS Import does. CardExport 2 wouldn't have a market if Palm built this capability into the OS waiting to be tapped. The USB capability built into the Palm OS is truly rudimentary.
