iPad Game Review: Warships: Sea on Fire! HD
Reviewed by Shaun Price
Over the years there have been many iterations of the board game Battleship, both actual and imitation. Warships: Sea on Fire! HD is an imitation but the gameplay is exactly the same as the board game. You just have a lot more ships.
With Warships you have only one mode of gameplay but you can either play the campaign or the instant. With Campaign you choose from three different scenes including World War, Pirates, and Science Fiction. Each has 20 levels to complete with each becoming more challenging than the next. You can pick up and play any scene you want in the instant play. There is an internal ranking system for the game. It does not grant you anything other than a rank. You start out from Ensign and can go all the way up to Fleet Admiral, and you can only earn those rank promotions by playing in campaign mode. Instant play puts you into the World War and offers one-off single battle that allows you to get more practice.
Unfortunately, Warships is a one-person game. If they had made it two-person that may have made it a more interesting game. You touch the battlefield to place the ships or select fields for attack. While placing the ships you can drag them around the battlefield, rotate them by touching the ?rotate? icon and confirm their placement with the ?anchor? icon or just double tap on the spot. To launch an attack during the battle select a field and touch the ?fire? or double tap the field.
Rather than depicting Battleships as two boards - those of you and your opponent - you?re shown isometric areas of the landscape with a grid overlay. The backgrounds to each scene are very well detailed. The ships are superbly designed as well as animations of the missiles fly at your enemy. The touch controls are very accurate and precise.
The Background and sound effects are different for each scene. They are not that impressive but thet do give the game a slightly different feel. If there had been iPod music support I would have liked it a whole lot more. The audio quality was great just not a wide variety.
Warships HD is great for those true die hard battleship lovers. But if you are not, the game doesn?t have a huge value attract new players. I liked the Science Fiction scene the most, which is a good value added for Sci-Fi fans. The instant play offers the option to play a quick game here an there, but I would be hard pressed to see anyone one playing this for more that 30 minutes. It is worth the money if you want a battleship game though since this is currently the only battleship type game on the iPad.
