Kindle News: Amazon Announces Third Generation of Kindle

Amazon today announced the third generation of their popular Kindle eReader series, which is expected to ship on August 27.

Here are some of the highlights:
  • All-New, High-Contrast E-Ink Screen: 50% better contrast than any other e-reader
  • New Sleek Design: 21% smaller body with same 6" size reading area
  • 15% Lighter: Only 8.7 ounces
  • Built-in WiFi: In addition to the 3G wireless, you can connect to WiFi hotspots
  • Double the Storage: Carry 3,500 books wherever you go
  • New Model, the Kindle WiFi: Taking a page from Barnes and Noble's eBook, the Kindle WiFi is less expensive and lacks 3G
  • Read Even in Bright Sunlight: No glare
  • Books in 60 Seconds: Think of a book and start reading it in 60 seconds. Kindle uses the same 3G wireless technology as advanced cell phones - but unlike cell phones, there are no monthly bills and no annual contracts
  • Battery Life of One Month: A single charge lasts up to one month.

The third generation Kindle and Kindle WiFi will cost $189 and $139, respectively, and are available for pre-order now at Amazon.com.

Well, it depends on your preferences. My iPad has a bright and beautiful screen and it's great for many things, but for reading eBooks, I must admit that an eInk display is more comfortable to look at. eReaders are also smaller and lighter, and their battery life is longer.

And Amazon currently has a much larger selection of books, and they tend to have the lower prices. I concur with Jacob, the iPad is wonderful in many ways, but it makes my eyes cry for mercy when I read for an hour or two. I spend enough time looking at an LCD for work, my eyes appreciate the break when I read.

Re: Kindle News: Amazon Announces Third Generation of Kindle

Many thanks for this information; does the WiFi only version have a "replaceable battery" and because it "appears" to have the controls on the right side, is there a "workaround" for someone with a slight paralysis on the right side?
Thank you in advance Jacob and/or Lisa!
Robert

It looks like the battery is semi-sealed inside like the last Kindle.

If the display supports rotation, then one could use it with the buttons on the left, but since it doesn't ship until Aug. 27th and I haven't yet seen one in person, I don't know if it supports display rotation like its big brother the Kindle DX. My guess is that it doesn't since Amazon has offered that feature only on the larger and more expensive DX.

Re: Kindle News: Amazon Announces Third Generation of Kindle

Dear Lisa, and Jacob,
I talked with Kindle support, and the WiFi model has portrait and landscape view just like the 3G and WiFi model for $50 more so the menu keys are on the right side, there is a workaround for those with disabilities; there is also text to speech. I also suggested that the Kindle site reveal that the battery is "removable" I reminded them that the iPad has a "sealed" battery and while highly unlikely, if any device is sent back for a replacement battery then "critical information may/ but may not be exposed; the person I spoke with agreed; lastly we discussed speed and while the 3G may off an option, iWiFi is definitely faster; the only advantage I see for the 3G model is the frequent traveler" opton. Hope what I have found out helps!

Dear Jacob and Lisa
Your welcome!
Please let me know either by EMail or PIM if you find anything different then what I have learned;it would appear that the WiFi only option is the same as the WiFi+3G model, with 3G omitted
Thank you in advance!
Robert

Tsk. Tsk. Tsk.
How could anyone forget that the AmazonKindle is cheaper making it better than the ipad's ibooks by a landslide.

Based on the wording of the question, I was considering it from the POV of someone who already owns an iPad, in which case just downloading the (free) Kindle app would be cheaper than buying a Kindle (although there are still lots of reasons the Kindle might be worth getting).
