IDC smartphone report, Android gaining, good time to own HTC stock

IDC's metrics for smartphone shipments worldwide in the second quarter of 2010 are out, and they report that manufacturers who are cozy with Android are pulling ahead. HTC more than doubled shipments from the same quarter a year ago, Samsung has crept up to position 5, pushing Motorola out of the top 5 list and RIM sold 11.2 million handsets-- a new record but their market share decreased from 19.1 to 17.8 percent. Apple is holding steady in the number 3 position with 8.4 million iPhones sold in Q2 and their market share rose worldwide by 0.9%.

Nokia is still on top, but their numbers continue to erode with a 2.1% market share loss and 24 million handsets sold.

IDC's report covers sales by manufacturer, rather than platform, and here's the current breakdown according to their research.

2. Research In Motion 17.8%
