iPhone Game Review: Karoshi
Reviewed by ninjackid
When you first open the YoYo games latest game on the iOS, Karoshi, the game tells you to "Forget everything you know about video games."
Boy are they right?! Because in this game the goal isn?t to survive, no sir, the goal here is to die. That should be easy, right? Wrong!
Mr. Karoshi is an employee for YoYo corp. So to entertain you, you get to figure out how to kill him in 50 levels. The game plays like a 2D platformer but it's actually more of a puzzler than a platformer.
The game starts out pretty simple. There are various hazards and dangers such as spikes, fire, electricity and such to kill Mr. Karoshi. In the first few levels it's pretty easy to figure out what's the right way to go, but as levels progress, new obstacles are added such as Mr. Karoshi's Boss who, if Mr. Karoshi touches him it immediately makes him sad and he jumps lower than usual, making it challenging to hit himself on a spike.
Various coins are also places in some of the levels for you to collect. Also added for extra replay value is an endless mode in which you have to complete tasks in 5 seconds. This mode is actually pretty addictive and is unlocked when you collect 10 coins.
Controlling Mr. Karoshi is as simple as two buttons at the bottom of the screen for going left and right and a button to jump. The controls can really make or break a game, especially in platformers. And YoYo games hits the nail right on the head for this one. The game is a joy to play thanks to the easy to use and smooth controls.
Graphics & Sound
The graphics have a great retro feel and look to them and work really well for the game. Backgrounds change whenever Mr. Karoshi's mood changes, providing visual cues for the gameplay. Overall the graphics look good.
Composed by Jake Almond, the soundtrck is very catchy and polished in Karoshi. The music and sound effects are fun to listen to while your hero, or an overworked Japanese salesman as Mr. Karoshia is, finds different hilarious ways to produce his own demise. iPod music is also supported.
Overall, Karoshi is a fun little puzzle platformer with an amusing plot. If you're looking for a puzzle out of the ordinary, Karoshi is worth a look. The gameplay is a little different from generic platformers, and you will need to be quick as well as clever to beat the game. And I bet you?ve never heard yourself say ?For heaven?s sake, the guy just wanted to die!? while jumping a platform.
