Editor's Ratings (1-5): 5
What's Hot: Very high quality leather, elegant design, and fine craftsmanship.
What's Not: Not cheap.
If you are the kind of person who likes fine leather products, the Vintcase will whisper its siren song to you. Made with super fine cowhide in a traditional Spanish leather making method, the Original Vintcase for iPad 2 is both very protective and highly stylish. Its elegant design is modeled after the old-world journal or book style, wrapped in extra leather and tied with a leather strap. The case has a form fitting tablet holder that has cutouts for all ports and buttons, and it has a built-in tablet stand. The small case maker in Ubrique, Spain, is selling this case in Europe for 79 Euros and 99 Euros for the U.S. buyers and that price includes shipping. As with many real handmade cases, it will take the case maker a week to produce your case after you order it.
At first glance, the Original Vintcase for iPad 2 looks like an older journal book or an old Marine chart bundle. The case has a bi-fold opening with the tablet holder sitting in the middle. The tablet holder has thicker leather, to protect the back and bezels of the iPad 2?s display. The holder is form fitting but has some wiggle room, so that it?s very easy to put in the tablet or take it out. You close the case first with the cover on the right which is also thick to protect the iPad 2?s screen, then with the cover on the left which is thinner leather. The thinner cover adds a more luxury feel to the case, and has an attached leather cord to wrap up the case in three turns.
Even with so many layers of covers, the Original Vintcase for iPad 2 is surprisingly slim and actually not heavy at all. It weighs 11.6 oz., which is a couple of ounces lighter than the Saddleback Leather Case for the iPad 2. Compared to the Saddleback Leather case, the Vintcase is more refined with a better fit and less rugged look. Both cases have top notch quality and craftsmanship, but the design philosophy and craft method are different. The Vintcase for iPad 2 is more ?indoor? style while the Saddleback is more ?outdoor? style. The leather on the Vintcase is super fine and feels very soft in hand. The style models after old-world high quality journals and books as opposed Western style saddle fashion. The Original Vintcase for iPad 2 has impeccable stitching and the case has a smoothed out fine leather interior that looks classy.
Another thing that the Original Vintcase for iPad 2 does better than the Saddleback case for the iPad 2 is provide full functionality of the tablet while it?s in the case. The tablet holder is much softer leather and easy to work with. The cutouts for the top ports and the bottom 30-pin connector are perfectly aligned, so you should have no trouble using them. The tablet holder on the case opens cleverly on the right, exposing the only side of the iPad 2 that has buttons for easy access.
The tablet holder covers a good portion of the front bezel around the display. To offer access to the front facing camera and the Home button, the case has two large cutouts that neatly expose both for easy access. The back of the case also has small holes nicely cut for the speaker grill. The bi-folding covers on the Original Vintcase for iPad 2 can also function as a tablet stand. The thicker part of the case has enough strength to prop up the iPad 2, and the knot of the leather cord on the soft cover functions as a stop for the stand. The iPad 2 is reasonably steady while sitting in the case.
We have seen many iPad 2 cases, the Original Vintcase for iPad 2 stands out with its excellent quality in material and craftsmanship. The case looks and feels luxurious, yet it?s very functional. The case is very well built and will last you for years. In fact, the case maker says the more you use it the more it will have that old-world high quality journal or book style the case intends to be. You also get the luxury treatment when you buy the case: it comes in a gift box with two layers of paper wrapping. It will make a very nice gift for that special iPad 2 owner.
Price: 79 Euros for EU; 99 Euros to ship to the U.S.
