iSkin specializes in making keyboard protectors, laptop bags and iDevice cases. Their latest solo Smart case for the iPad 2 is designed to work closely with Apple's Smart Cover to protect what Smart Cover doesn't: the back and sides of the iPad 2. The iSkin solo Smart for iPad 2 is a hybrid plastic that combines TPU and polycarbonate, and it's clear to show off the iPad 2's design. The case can also function on its own without the Smart Cover.
The Skin solo Smart for iPad 2 is quite slim and light. The case has a very soft surface yet is very form fitting to the iPad 2. It?s actually a little too form fitting that it?s a little bit hard to put it on the tablet. The hybrid material allows the case to be soft where it wraps around the bottom to cover some of the bezel below the display, but also to be rigid to keep the form of the case. The Skin solo Smart for iPad 2 comes in two parts: the main case and the side piece that slips to the main case should you use it without a Smart Cover. If you do use it with a Smart Cover, leave off the side piece, and the iSkin case has perfect cutouts for the Smart Cover to attach to the iPad 2.
Other than the clever design for working with a Smart Cover, the Skin solo Smart for iPad 2 case also offers port protections. The case has cutouts for the audio jack, the 30-pin connector and the screen lock button. But the audio jack and the 30-pin connector cutouts have port covers, which is handy for dust or sand protection. The volume buttons and the power buttons don?t have cutouts, but they are under specially designed button covers and they are easy to use. The rear camera also enjoys a cutout, but the speaker grill oddly gets covered 1/3 of the way. The case only covers some of the front bezel on the bottom and has a semi-circle cut for the Home button.
If you?ve been using an Apple Smart Cover with your iPad 2 and worrying about the back of your tablet, the Skin solo Smart for iPad 2 is a good answer. The hybrid material feels soft in hand yet it?s very durable. It?s clear so that it doesn?t obscure the view of your beautiful tablet, and it has Microban antimicrobial technology embedded in the material to prevent the growth of bacteria. So if your kids play with your iPad 2 often, this is a good case to get. The design is clever and works with or without the Smart Cover.
The cutouts have good alignments, except the speaker grill, and it?s nice to have port covers when possible, which is a rare thing on a non-rugged case. The Skin solo Smart for iPad 2 has a high gloss yet rubberized finish and feels grippy in hand to prevent from slipping. And it adds very little bulk and weight.
For users who look to protect the entire tablet while using the Smart Cover, the Skin solo Smart for iPad 2 is designed to do just that. The case does a good job working with the Smart Cover together to cover the entire tablet, and yes, it?s $50, but the hybrid material, the antimicrobial surface and port covers are some extra features you don?t get on a cheaper case. The Skin solo Smart for iPad 2 is slim and light, yet it?s durable and rigid enough that you won?t have to worry about scratches, bumps and bruises when you put it in your backpack or travel bag.
