iPad App Review: Mindjet for iPad
Reviewed by ColeDaddy
The latest iteration of Mindjet for the iOS platform was formerly known as the wonderful mindmapping app, myMind from AnotherView. Several months ago, myMind appeared to be junior to other, more superior mindmapping software. However, in the months leading up to myMind being sold to Mindjet, AnotherView ramped up the updates creating what quickly became one of my favorite productivity applications.
I was surprised to find that myMind had been purchased by Mindjet and ended up replacing the latter's house app, which was basic and stale in comparison to its competitors' smaller independent creations. So, the question is, when Mindjet bought and essentially rebranded "myMind" to "Mindjet", how does the latest and greatest hold up against its contemporaries?
The revamped Mindjet is a definite upgrade to the initial versions this company released. The previous iOS app lacked the ingenuity the Mindjet brand is known for, suffering from bland, vanilla features that can easily be found in other mindmapping software offered for free.
Mindjet now comes chock full of bells and whistles to put this software at the top of the some of the best iOS productivity apps. Users can easily navigate through an intuitive touch-based call and response software where one tap/hold brings up arrows that can provide a new parent or child topic when you finger slides in any direction or an arrow showing a linking relationship. Double-taps/hold call up a dial where users can slide their finger and choose edit tools (cut/paste/copy/trash) within the current topic.
Users can create maps and send them via email or store them in Dropbox. Additionally, users are treated to a simple interface that has a toolbar that hides when not in use, or slides out when needed, allowing for the availability of more screen real estate to be used for mapping.
The intuitive and rather spartan interface while minimal is perfect for the app since mindmapping involves brain-dumping all your ideas as quickly as possible in a format that is simple to comprehend. One should not be bogged down with navigating through a myriad of confusing, three-tiered nested menus at the risk of losing one's ideas and thoughts. Mindjet allows users the freedom to provide quick and dirty content while providing enough tools for them to go back and clean up their content to be polished with greater sophistication for a wider audience presentation.
The only minor-niggle I have is to marry up the animation with sound. This isn't a dealbreaker by any means given the plethora of functionality provided.
As previously alluded to, the animation is clean and robust. There are many choices of arrows, line thickness, line color, topic shapes and icons to pretty up the map with pleasing eye candy to make mindmapping a greater joy. While the intent of mindmapping is to brain-dump ideas and capture thoughts, it doesn't hurt that users have at their disposal tools to clean up a presentation according to personal preferences or to spice it up for a prime time audience.
Mindjet is designed for anyone who is looking for a mindmapping software for the iOS that has an intuitive, clean and responsive user interface that won't bog them down from capturing their thoughts and ideas. The software can be used for business professionals brainstorming for a project, students writing a paper or the everyday user planning a trip. There is simply any number of uses for this powerful productivity application.
