What's Hot: Easy to install and convenient to use, small footprint.

What's Not: Only works in one angle.

More and more iPad users are using their tablets as recipe books, to help them use the iPad 2 hands free while cooking, Macally released a magnetic cabinet mount and table counter stand for the iPad 2. The Macally MagStand2 is designed to use only with the iPad 2, and it can hold the tablet via its magnetic side (the side that works with Smart Cover). The magnetic stand is very easy to install if you wish to hang it under your cabinet, and it's steady as a table stand also. The Macally MagStand2 comes in white.

Design

For a mount/stand that can hold the iPad 2 with only magnets, the Macally MagStand2 comes in a surprisingly compact form. The mount is made with plastic with soft touch surface that feels nice in hand. The mount has some thickness and feels sturdy enough to hold the iPad 2. It weighs 7.2 ounces. The Macally MagStand2 comes with a mounting plate and three screws as well as instructions on how to mount it under your cabinet or on a wooden/plastic counter top. The mount is very easy to install. Once the stand/mount is in place, just slide your iPad 2 into it, voila, you can use your tablet hands free.

The biggest question when you use a magnetic mount to hold your iPad 2 under a cabinet is that is it strong enough or is it too strong. The Macally MagStand2 is certainly strong enough to hold the tablet. The iPad 2 doesn't jiggle or move at all while in the mount, but I wouldn't bump it with force while it's hanging in the mount. You can pull the tablet out of the mount or stand with only a small mount of force, and the magnets don't feel too strong. The tablet slot on the stand is specifically measured for the iPad 2, and the tablet won't fit if it's in a case even with the magnetic strip exposed.

Features

Since the iPad 2 sits in the Macally MagStand2 mount/stand via its magnetic side, you can use all the ports and buttons freely. You can use the power button, volume buttons and the Home button as well as the touch screen while the iPad 2 is hanging in the mount, just be careful not to use too much force. Obviously the tablet can only sit in landscape orientation, unless you mount the Macally MagStand2 horizontally on the side of a cabinet.

The Macally MagStand2 also works as a tabletop or counter top stand, though the iPad 2 can sit only in one straight angle. If you have a platform or table stand that can put the iPad 2 at your eye level, the Macally MagStand2 can hold it in the right place for you.

Conclusion

Incredibly compact and reasonably sturdy, the Macally MagStand2 for the iPad 2 is a great mounting solution as it's very easy to install and simple to use. It's strong enough hold the iPad 2 with magnetic strips built-in, and can work as a stand. If you watch and follow cooking shows or check recipes while cooking, the Macally MagStand2 can certainly hold your iPad 2 in place for easy viewing. The mount however has only one viewing angle and it doesn't have any additional features such as pass through charging option.
