iPhone Game Review: Ice Rage
Reviewed by SpaZtrigger
Mountain Sheep looks to bring back the classic 8-bit hockey experience right to the iPhone with their new game Ice Rage. Bringing with it a cast of well known characters such as the famous John Gore and possibly even more famous Enviro-Bear. This addictive game is just another accomplishment to go with Mountain Sheep's ever expanding list of accomplishments.
Ice Rage has two game modes, single player and multiplayer. In single player you can choose one of two options, the new Tournament mode of Quick play mode. Ice Rage has three different difficulty modes which are easy, medium, and hard. Easy level gives the player slow movement and an automatic goalie (which means he automatically moves to block shots). In medium the player moves faster and the goalie still is automatic. Finally in hard mode the player moves vey fast and the goalie must be manually controlled.
You can also choose a roster of characters like John Gore, Enviro-Bear, Santa (if you bought the DLC), and the other hockey players. While there are 9 characters to choose from, the character screen only shows six which leaves you wondering where the other 3 went. In order to access the other 3 players (the Bike Baron as one of them) you must tap the first player on the roster twice to switch to one of the 3 hidden characters. Mountain Sheep recently submitted an update where the characters are more easily accessible and will now have a description about them. The different characters don't really add much to the game except for Santa who has super speed and Enviro-Bear who has super strength. Obviously like its name, Quick Play mode is meant for quick play so the player with more points win after playing for a set period of 1 minute and 45 seconds.
In the new tournament mode you are pitted against a series of opponents who get better with each match. In the end after you beat all sorts of people, like Santa and Enviro-Bear, you get to fight the boss known as Skar. After you win a match you are allowed to upgrade your character in one of three categories: Power, Speed, and Technique. Upgrading power makes your player tackle harder and shoot harder while speed makes your player move faster. Technique increases the players puck grabbing radius allowing the player to grab the puck easier.
To add more incentive to play tournament mode Mountain Sheep also added a leaderboard in tournament mode where depending on how much points you score and pick steals can give you bundles of points bringing you to the top(with me as the 430 best player out of 139,320!) While tournament mode added more playability and fun to the game I still felt like something was missing like a career mode where you would be able to upgrade your player, but unlike tournament mode you would be able to keep the upgrades forever and where there would be more stats to upgrade and more bosses.
Multiplayer mode also brings a lot to the already amazing game where even on an iPhone screen could be played with almost no hassle. Playing against a friend was superb and even more so when we played on hard mode where no one scored since we were too busy trying to protect our goals and trying to tackle each other. The only problem that I had was how limited the joystick was on multiplayer. When you play any game with a virtual joystick you usually want to move your finger around the left area of the screen. But in multiplayer I couldn't do that since the joystick radius was too small and I found myself stopping during critical times. Although it's not a major problem it would be nice if the developer could make the joystick radius larger on multiplayer.
Overall Ice Rage is a very fun game with as much re-playability as games like Angry Birds and Mountain Sheep's other game, Mingore! Also with more and more updates coming along the way Ice Rage will only continue to get better and better.
Mountain Sheep is well known for their amazing graphics and in Ice Rage they came through again. Like with their other games they have unique 3D graphics that draw people in and want to play the game for the amazing graphics. Characters are unique and fun, and actions move smoothly.
The controls are equally as good with a virtual joystick. You can control the players on your team easily and smoothly. The only small issue is, as mentioned, in multiplayer mode, the virtual joystick needs bigger radius.
There really isn't much music in Ice Rage apart from the usually sounds you would find in a hockey match and the main menu music. The main menu music fits very well with the competitive mood of the game, but it doesn't affect gameplay much because there is no music during the match apart from the cheers from the fans. There are some sound FX such as sounds made by the puck, crushing sound when tackling someone, and cheering sound when someone scores a point. While there isn't much music, sound FX brings out the realistic hockey match atmosphere.
If you wanted to liven up your game with your own music then your out of luck.....at least for now. When you play your music and try to open Ice Rage it will cause the game to crash making it unplayable until you turn off the music. Luckily Mountain Sheep submitted an update where the player gets a new character, character descriptions, and the option to play your own music.
Mountain Sheep has come through again with another perfectly well made game that's match the quality of their other great games. With the addictiveness of Angry Birds, the awesomeness of Infinity Blade, and the epic-ness of other Mountain Sheep game it's no wonder that Ice Rage is #6 on the charts.
Ratings (scale of 1 to 5):
Graphics: - 5 -Fun graphics that draw the player in,
Sound: - 4.5 - Realistic effects with an awesome main menu music that fits the game.
Controls: - 4.5 - Smooth and responsive controls, but in multiplayer the radius of the joystick was too small making it a hassle to play.
Gameplay: - 5 - Tournament mode added more re-playability to the already addictive game making Ice Rage even better.
Playing Hints and Tips:
-When trying to score try to get you opponent in the opposite side of the field so that you can score without having your opponent block you.
-When you have the puck get you opponent close to you so that you touch the shoot the puck allowing you to shoot the puck and tickle your opponent at the same time.
