iPad Game Review: My Kingdom for the Princess III Review
Reviewed by Guy Dayen
Nevosoft comes back to the Kingdom for the Princess franchise with a third installment of the story. This time, the action jumps forward twenty-five years. Arthur and the Princess Helen settled down and became a royal couple. During that time, they reigned over the kingdom and had three sons. Now, a quarter century later, the time has come for them to step down and choose a successor.
Each son feels the time has come to wed, but unfortunately, all three are in love with the same woman: Princess Elisabeth. Her would-be suitors must prove their worth by best managing the kingdom and saving her country from ruin. Which son will prove the victor and win the heart of the princess? Your decisions will prove crucial to the final outcome!
My Kingdom for the Princess III is essentially a time and resource management game. Those familiar with this series, or other games like it, will be comfortable with game play right off the bat. Newcomers to this type of game will pick up on the game play very quickly. Basically, you are given a variety of tasks to accomplish in a set amount of time. You must plan carefully and marshal your resources wisely in order to accomplish your goals before the timer runs out. There are workers that you control in the game, and you must decide how best to use them to complete your tasks.
The players familiar with the series will find a few new elements: buildings bring in more resources, your people work harder and there are more bonuses to be earned. New mini-games are also built into My Kingdom for the Princess III to help gain more coins in the game. In addition, there are pieces of an artifact that are collected on each level.
If you've never played a time and resource management game before, you'll find that the first levels do a good job of introducing players to the mechanics of the game so that you're not overwhelmed. But the difficulty ramps up pretty quickly; you definitely won't be bored playing this game - you won't have time to be!
The game is controlled by taping on various buildings and points in the scenery to summon your workers and set them to their tasks. It's a very intuitive game; easy to pick up and suitable for all ages.
The graphics will be instantly familiar with veteran players of the Kingdom series. The landscapes and characters are pretty much the same, but there is a new castle and various other new characters and elements. A big change is that this installment of My Kingdom for the Princess is presented with HD graphics. The game looks great on the new iPad, with vibrant colors and razor-sharp details. Of course, the game still looks terrific on the first two iPad versions.
The look of the game is very polished. The characters have quite a distinctive personality and the game is lots of fun to look at. Many times, graphics seem to take a back seat to the mechanics of the game, but it is not the case at all with My Kingdom. The game is a pleasure to look at, and the cut scenes are very entertaining and serve to advance the storyline quite well. My only gripe might be that the characters and the resource panel are a bit on the small size, but this is a minor consideration.
The music and graphics in My Kingdom for the Princess III are very good. The music doesn't grate and fades enough in the background that you don't feel like you're constantly listening to the same loop. And while the dialogue is minimal during gameplay itself, the auditory cues provided are crucial to alert you to the timer running out. You hope that while you're playing, you won't hear that night is approaching, because it means that your time is running drastically short. Players should keep their ears open and their fingers alert.
My Kingdom for the Princess III is a superb follow-up to the previous two entries in the series. The quality of the game is top-notch, and Nevosoft have added a few new elements to the game to keep things interesting. Moving forward a quarter century and introducing new characters to the game was a great idea.
This type of game is perfect for the entire family. There are no aspects to My Kingdom for the Princess III that would make it unsuitable for younger players, and it is complex enough to keep older and more experienced players interested. It's easy to learn how to play the game; the challenge comes in mastering the more advanced levels and playing well enough to earn gold on every level. Replay value is high, as the tasks are varied enough to merit playing more than once to gain that gold star on the game map at every step of the journey.
My wife especially enjoys playing this game; she's played through the first two Kingdoms, and in her opinion, this third installment is just as much fun. We both recommend it for people who enjoy casual games that can be played in short bursts here and there, or in longer sessions. My Kingdom for the Princess III is definitely worthy of its royal lineage.
