If you have the US version, I believe that only English resources are installed in ROM.

I changed my Ipaq 5450 language from spanish to english... The process was very similar with the older ipaq's versions...
This process works with Pocket PC202 and PPC 2003
Follow the next steps:
You need an Hexadecimal editor (example UltraEdit-32)
1) Download the english version from the image (HP iPAQ Pocket PC h5400 Series ROM Update) from: http://h18007.www1.hp.com/support/files/HandheldiPAQ/us/download/19957.html You can use the the Pocket PC 2003 Upgrade CD too.
2) Run the .exe file. Extract all the files and cancel the operation.
2b) If you have de Pocket PC 2003 upgrade CD: - Run the upgrade process until the Licence Requirements window appears (don't cancel the step) - The upgrade files are extracting automatically in the directory C:\Documents and Settings\your_username\Local Settings\Temp\pft##.tmp - Copy all the file in another directory - Then return to the Licence Requirements windows and cancel the operation
3) Go to your directory and make a copy to the file KERNEL*.nbf (the name of the copy file most NOT start with "KERNEL")
4) Edit the original KERNEL*.nbf with your hexadecimal editor. Change the first lines: ENGLISH to SPANISH and ENG to SPA, save the file and quit the editor
5) Execute the RUU.exe 6) In the Welcome to the ROM Update Utility for the iPAQ Pocket PC select the checkbox and press Next 7) In the next windows Follow the instructions below to prepare the iPAQ Pocket PC for the update process and press Next 8) In the Current information about your iPAQ Pocket PC windows press update. 9) In the next window you pass the validation of the language of your ipaq. In this step, go to your directory, rename the original KERNEL*.nbf (the name file most NOT start with "KERNEL"). Then rename the copy of the original file with the original KERNEL*.nbf name 10) Return to the upgrade window and continue the process...
Importante Note. This process terminate with your ipaq warranty. This process helps you to upgrade or change language for your h5450 ipaq, but the system configuration still appears as your original language. This means that in next upgrades you will have to repeat the same procedure.

starting from a PPC 2002 - italian ROM 2.00.21 ITA. I used the 2003 upgrade eng version all tricks and ultraedit stuff. now my 5450 is running PPC2003_eng (OS Win ce 4.2 / and product rev level 3.0) BUT the wireless(LEAP) is not working , if I try to install HP updates, it says I'm running an italian ipaq and the only available LEAP sw is english. AND I'M NOT ABLE TO CHANGE TO "ITA" THE LEAP HP SW.

Hi, It works for IPAQ 4100 serie, too. You just have to change everiwhere in the *.nbf document the language you got on your IPAQ to the one you prefere to have (i.e. german to eng etc.). Certainly, follow the procedure from previous messages! Mosha

Hi, It meansthe file *.nbf (in his case it was named kernel.nbf). So, open the *.nbf file with ultra... or something alse for hex files, find in the text the language i.e. english and replace it with what ever you like. Close and start the upgrade following the instruction below.
(1) Download the english (or what ever you prefer) version from the image (HP iPAQ Pocket PC YOUR MODEL Series ROM Update) from: http://h18007.www1.hp.com/support/files/HandheldiPAQ/us/download/19957.html You can use the the Pocket PC 2003 Upgrade CD too.
2) Run the ruu.exe file.
- Run the upgrade process until the Licence Requirements window appears (don't cancel the step) - The upgrade files are extracting automatically in the directory of your choice.- - Then return to the Licence Requirements windows and do not do anything before replacing the *.nbf file with the one that you changed the language in it. Finish the procedure and that is that.

I tried this several times without success but then tried an older rom file (1.10 not 1.11) and changed ENGLISH to GERMANY and ENG to GER in the nbf file and it works fine now

This works! (Ipaq 5550)
Used the ROM file SP27674.exe to upgrade from French to English. This was easy and works 100% like the process describes.
On the HP support site they recommend that you also install the update SP28220.exe. This isn’t possible anymore. You get an error that the language isn’t correct for this update.

Ok So I downloaded the ROM Update and went to edit the .nbf file, but where is the ENG or English? I cant find it within the file. Please tell me that its right infront of me or that its hidden deep within the file somewhere.

I was wondering it is possible to change the language through a more legitimate method, ie purchasing a new copy of windows or sending it in to be changed, I dont want to void the warranty, and don't mind spending a few extra dollars to do this, I would just like to avoid buying a new IPAQ.

You'd have to call HP tech support and see if they'd sell it to you. My guess is no, but it's worth a phone call to see.
