HP Mobile Messenger: Live report from HP Mobility Summit
      #19052 - 02/03/05 12:33 PM

We attended the HP Mobility Summit yesterday in San Jose; California, an event for press and analysts. HP introduced 10 new business notebooks, including an XP Tablet which we'll cover in another post.

In addition, they flashed us a glimpse of the forthcoming HP Mobile Messenger during the presentation. We met with Rick Roesler, Vice President of Handhelds and Mobile Computing later in the day and had the pleasure of playing with his own Mobile Messenger. While we weren't allowed to take any photos of the device, images of that device have made their way onto the web in the form of a leak to Brighthand, and we're providing one of those here.

* Pocket PC Phone with a GSM mobile phone integrated. Quad band 850/900/1800/1900MHz world phone with GPRS and EDGE. That's right: EDGE-- for some reason hard to find in Windows Mobile devices.

* The Mobile Messenger (possible model number hw6500) is the first US device we've seen with a square 240 x 240 pixel color display.

* It runs Windows Mobile 2003 Second Edition (not Magneto, aka Windows Mobile 2005)

* has a 312MHz processor

*1.3MP camera with lens on the rear (indoor photos were very grainy but given the excellent job HP did with the rx3715 camera we're sure the final product will be much improved).

*embedded thumb keyboard (permanant unlike the iPAQ 6315).

* Form factor very much like a BlackBerry but more attractive. It's the same size as the iPAQ 6315 when the 6315 is not wearing its snap on keyboard. It's quite smaller than the 6315 with keyboard attached.

*It has three radios: GSM phone, Bluetooth, NO WIFI as HP decided to include a GPS in the unit. That's right, the little bugger may lack WiFi but it does has a GPS with no unsightly external antenna. Rick said GPS reception is exellent even though it lacks and antenna and he was able to pick up satellites when indoors (near a window, we're sure). The device will be bundled with TomTom GPS software.

* The Mobile Messenger has an SD slot supporting SDIO and a mini SD slot-- isn't that interesting.

* HP will continue to sell the iPAQ 6315 after the Mobile Messenger is introduced sometime after mid- 2005. The Mobile Messenger is geared to folks who need to do lots of email and instant messaging on the road (you guessed that already from the name, didn't you?).

* While he couldn't be specific, Mr. Roesler said we'll be seeing more HP devices with integrated cell phones in the future, including Windows Mobile Smartphones.

Hi Lisa,

You mention in your post an XP tablet and I know you said you'll save it for another post but could I ask whether this is the new TC4200 model announced this week or another model? Many people have been expecting an updated TC1100 to appear and were kind of disappointed that one wasn't announced this week along with the TC2400. Any info would be most welcome.

Phil

It is the TC4200. Unfortunately, they didn't mention any plans to update the TC1100, but it will remain on sale. HP sees the TC1100 as a vertical market product, while the TC4200 with it's traditional clamshell form factor is for "everyone". Not sure I agree that the TC110 is vertical, but that's HP's stand and I imagine they've sold it mostly to vertical market customers in the past.

I doubt we'd see it before mid-summer at the very earliest. Anc carrier qualifications can delay phone releases even further. That's a long time to wait!

Lisa,
can you give me your opinion? i was going to get the 6315 in the next month. do you think it is worth the wait to get the 6500 or is it too early to tell?

It really is too early to tell. I only had about 10 minutes to play with that unreleased model. I personally would prefer the iPAQ 6315 because it has a full QVGA standard Pocket PC screen running at 240 x 320. The Mobile Messenger has a 240 x 240 screen which is a first for a Pocket PC, and support for that resolution was only added with the recent Windows Mobile 2003 Second Edition OS. I do wonder how 3rd party apps written for the QVGA screen will look on the new device. And games generally have graphics hard-coded, so likely many will not be playable without releases for that size display.

Hi, I have heard other (less credible) reports about the HP hw6500 saying there might be two versions juggling around different combinations of features (camera, no camera, gps, no gps, blue tooth or WiFi, etc). Have you heard anything else about WiFi on the device? Any commentary would really be appreciated!!!
