palmOne LifeDrive Mobile Manager Review
      #19994 - 05/17/05 09:10 PM

It's a PDA, it's a hard disk based MP3 player, it's a portable video player, and it's palmOne's first Mobile Manager series device. The LifeDrive, with its internal 4 gig hard drive aims to handle all things portable and digital. The 320 x 480 color display, 416 MHz processor, integrated WiFi and Bluetooth make this a top notch Palm OS PDA and the ground-breaking hard drive, multimedia capabilities and super-easy file syncing and conversion might mean you won't be buying an iPod too.

Differences in various reviews [Re: LisaG]
      #19996 - 05/18/05 12:03 PM

Hi Lisa. There are a lot of reviews out there today regarding LifeDrive. However, not all of them gives similar results. I'm getting really confused about some important aspects.

1) Your review said there are 64MB of RAM. Is it for dynamic heap and HD cache, as "Program Storage", or shared resource for all 3?

2) Palm says there are 64MB of Program Storage. Is this in RAM (as in T3), ROM (as in T5), or separate HD partition (uhh)?

3) Can you launch program from HD as with SD cards?

4) Can you erase the "Program Storage" alone, and leaving HD intact? Else, any serious failures that used to require a hard reset now means restoring 4GB of data!

5) BargainPDA has a sober review of battery life, while yours is quite positive. Were there any tips in extending battery life?

The 64 megs of program memory works like the standard RAM on the T3-- all available for your use to store programs and data.

You can install apps and run them from the HD. I even installed a keyboard driver onto the HD and it worked fine.

As far as battery life, I'm not sure how many days the Bargain PDA reviewer actually used the unit. Like the Treo 650, it took about 4 charges to condition the LifeDrive's battery. Before that, runtimes weren't very good at all. After using it for 5 days and charging it 4 times, battery life greatly increased. When I read their review, I had a feeling that they hadn't had a chance to go through several charging cycles.

Thanks Lisa. More questions on the way. :-)

1) Does this mean actual RAM is larger than 64MB (since there still needs to be place to hold dynamic heap)?

2) Any built-in application to purge the Program Storage alone, other than letting battery run down (taking "advantage" of RAM being not NVFS)?

3) If you store all applications in RAM and use HDD only for data, do you see any slow down for apps not using HDD data at all?

4) Does launching applications from SD involves HDD at all (with or without zLauncher)? If not, we can avoid most of HDD latency by not storing any applications in HDD, and use it only for limited types of data - music, photo, video, and PC files. I'll use SD for any prc/pdb don't fit in 64MB RAM.

Thanks a bunch for clearing up the dust. :-)

Sorry I'm a bit slot to answer-- I'm on the road attending E3 (BIG games show) in L.A.

There must be physical RAM for caching (aside from the very small cache RAM in the drive). Interestingly, the LifeDrive actually reports that it has 65 megs of program memory available (though as far as I recall, the Palm OS 5 limit for RAM is 64 megs).

There is no program that just wipes out program memory leaving the HD intact. If one uses the LifeDrive Manager to place files on the HD in the first place, then LD Manager should restore them after a hard reset as a consolation (LifeDrive also keeps files in sync it's not just for file transfers). But if you use Drive Mode, then I assume the data wouldn't be restored. Since I'm on the road and using the LifeDrive as my main PDA, I don't want to test that hard reset right now . Will try it this weekend.

I haven't noticed a delay when launching apps from program memory. BTW, once an app is loaded from the HD it runs just fine as the app is temporarily copied into memory. As to what exactly constitutes program memory hardware wise, I'm waiting for an answer from palmOne as the reviewer data we received doesn't specify in detail.

Apps and data on SD cards run at usual SD card speeds (varies depending on how fast your card is, of course). The HD has no effect on card performance.

Overall, a very nice and thorough LifeDrive review. However, you stated: "All in all, an excellent design both in terms of functionality and aesthetics, though given the device's role as a portable MP3 and video player, I'm surprised that palmOne didn't incorporate a hardware volume control into the design....Cons: No hardware volume control, must use on-screen controls to adjust volume."

I don't see that there is any need for an additional separate hardware volume control when up/down on the D-pad works just fine, like on all of the Tungstens.

Just got palmOne's response re: details on memory: 32 megs of RAM (used for program execution and caching), 64 megs of program memory is "virtual" and is a partition on the HD.

DAngelo, yes, you're right, the up/down d-pad works to control volume!

We've updated our review to include WiFi speed tests using McAfee and DSL Reports test sites. Enjoy! It's under the WiFi section of the review.

Lisa-
First off let me tell you that I have read practically every review out there since I am really interested in this pda and I really liked yours. It covers all the things I need to know. I do have a couple of questions though, and I was wondering since you do mention that you have been using the Lifedrive while on the road, maybe you have some more answers. All the reviews I read have really confused me since many of them have totally contradictory statements.
1) While I am really interested in palm based PDAs I was wondering how this matches up to a PPC such as the Dell Axim X50v. I realized that for the same money I could buy an axim and a 4gb microdrive. Would it experience the same lags as the lifedrive does while accessing the drive?
2) A lot of the other reviews mention stuttering during high action scenes during video playback. I currently use TCPMP and I realized that probably some of the other reviews were using the media player that comes with the palm which would account for the different results. I was wondering if you experienced any choppiness while viewing high action scenes.
3) Many of the reviews also mention problems with audio stuttering while playing music especially when letting it run in the backround. I was wondering if this is a software problem or a hardware one. I currently use aeroplayer and don't have any problems with it. Some even call the lifedrive "unusable" while playing in the background due to how sluggish it is since all the RAM is used up to buffer the music. Is it unusable and would a different program alleviate this problem?
4) Other reviews experienced a lot of problems with pauses in wifi access. Have you had any problems with wifi just pausing for a while before it resumes with what you are doing? (Once again, I have the same question. Would this be a hardware or software problem?)
5)I'm curious to find out how the hard buttons hold up as far as games are concerned. While I realize that games aren't the only reason why people purchase a PDA, I personally use it quite a bit for games. Also, in the games department one reviewer had trouble with choppiness in bejeweled 2. I was wondering if you have had any problems with games doing this.
6)I am really worried about the whole speed issue. There are many reviews including yours that mention the lag but don't make a big deal out of it. There are others that talk about 6 second delays while switching between apps. They say that since the harddrive has to "spin up" it takes a while to check anything once it has spun down. While I don't mind a 1 or 2 second delay, a 6 or 8 second delay while switching apps will really get on my nerves. From what I understand, everything is stored on the harddrive. If I have not checked my contacts for 3 days and I tap on the address book function will it take a long time to boot up? Or are we talking 2-3 seconds. I can't imagine that it is SO much slower than my current PDA (see below), but that's why I am asking.
7) Last but not least, I am currently using a Sony Clie TJ-37 which runs on Palm OS 5.2. You mention compatibility issues between 3rd party apps and the lifedrive. Is it safe to assume that anything that works on a Palm OS 5.2 device will work on a 5.4 device? Or is there a big possibility that some of my programs and games that work on my Clie will not work on a lifedrive?

Sorry for all the questions. I really want to buy it tomorrow and after reading all those reviews (about 150 pages printed out!!!) I was left confused by the diversity in results between the reviews. I would appreciate any help you can offer in clearing up the matter. Thanks!

Re: palmOne LifeDrive Mobile Manager Review - Volume Control [Re: SKreme]
      #20029 - 05/21/05 10:32 PM

SKreme,
1) The X50v is a very nice PDA- esp. the dual slots and VGA display. I have the 4 gig Hitachi MicroDrive(shown in the photo with the LifeDrive and the same model is used in the LifeDrive).I've used the MicroDrive in both the X50v and the HP iPAQ hx4700 and the same delay exists. It simply takes a few seconds to spin up the drive and seek the requested data.

2) I've tested videos up to 500kbps and haven't seen digital breakup in TCPMP. I have seen it using MMplayer.

3) When playing MP3s using Pocket Tunes AND using the LifeDrive PDA functions, I have experienced 1 second stutters when launching an app (since that also accesses the hard disk significantly).I haven't had it stutter once in that launched app. Nor has the device gotten sluggish when playing MP3s in the background. If you're going to go in and out of apps a lot while playing MP3s in the background, the 1 second stutters could be annoying. If you're generally going to stay in the same app for periods of time, then I personally find it bearable.

4)I have not experienced WiFi stalls while downloading a page in the past week of use. Even when doing the rather intensive McAfee bandwidth speed tests. As an aside, Xiino is much faster than Blazer at rendering but doesn't do as "pretty" a job of it.

5) Like many folks, I'm a Bejeweled 2 addict and haven't experienced choppiness yet. The games I've tested are mostly stylus based so I can't say I've used the buttons heavily.

6)I used a stopwatch to time app launch times. I tested the first launch after a soft reset to ensure the app wasn't in RAM. It takes 2 seconds to launch a PIM app (contacts, calendar, etc) that's not cached in RAM. It has never taken 6 seconds to launch an app (even Docs to Go which aint a fast app). I would find 6 seconds intolerable. I can live with 2 seconds as a tradeoff for persistant storage and 4 gigs of hard drive, but that's me:).

The LifeDrive had plenty of data on it, so I think the afore-mentioned was a good real world test: 1.5 gigs of files on the LifeDrive partition, 20 megs in the 64 meg program memory area, 350 contacts and a few hundred calendar entries.

7) As I mentioned in the review, I keep my software current and didn't run into an app that didn't run so far. It sounds like you should be fine.

Could you please clarify how to swap files (i.e. MS-Word document; Excel workbook) between the 3.85Gb microdrive and 64Mb of Palm “program memory”? Do I need to plug the LifeDrive into to PC and transfer files from one “partition” to another? Is the Palm Desktop required to complete this transfer?

For MS Office docs, which are managed by Documents To Go, I'd open Docs To Go on the device and choose "save as" and save it to internal memory (or vice versa depending on which direction you need to move the file).

You could also use the Documents To Go desktop application to change the location of the file.

I found a program called RescoExplorer 2.5 (www.resco.net/palm) that gave me the following information about the varius types of memory on my LifeDrive.

Available free space
Dynamic 4556k/6144k
Storage 45446k/66844k

Max Dynamic Chunck 3366k
Max Storage Chunck 16383k
ROM size 16384k
DbCache 7045k

And Palmasaurus v1.0.16 (hazelware.luggle.com) shows the following info about the LifeDrive (I will leave out the obvius things like OS version and Company name)

Device ID:'TunX'
HAL ID:'aTux'
Color Depths: 16,8,4,2
Memory:16777k/68448k(24%)

I am not aware of the signifigance of some of these values but for those that are I felt it would be worth providing.
One thing i did find suprising is that the dynamic heap is only listed as 6144k.
I had expected it to have much more than this and it has proven to be a problem when running memory intensive games such as zDoomz and LJPs SNES emulator. Its seems that whenever there is much of an error on the device, it reboots and preforms a softreset. I wish it was able to handle the error right there and not reset every time but I understand that this would not always be posible. I timed a softreset on mine and it took 1 minute and 33 seconds get back to the prefs screen.

TunX looks alot like Tungsten X which was one of the rumored names for the device.
I dont know if thats realy why this came up but mabe at some stage in development they had considered this for the name.

Hopfully this helps.

Thanks for posting the detailed memory breakdown. Actually by Palm OS standards, 6 megs is a pretty good heap size-- though us power users will always want as much as we can get!

Anyone seen any deals yet? When a hot new Palm PDA comes out, it's generally hard to find it at a significant discount in the first month. But Dell.com sometimes has geat coupons, though it may take them a while to get them in stock and shipping.

Thanks again Lisa for all your help and clarification. I came up with one more question: Can the voice recorder option be used without holding the button down. For example if I wanted to record a lecture, is there a way to start it recording so that i could set it down and let it record for a half an hour or something? Or is it meant solely for voice memos and you have to hold down the button?

You need not hold down the record button on the LifeDrive or any other PDA, thank goodness. Just press the record button on-screen to start a new recording and hit the stop button on screen when you no longer need to record.

I've read when in Drive mode that you are unable to perform other functions. I wanted to ask whether you can use the voice record function as well as Word at the same time. I was thinking that this would be useful if I were in a lecture. Is performance effected at all? Thanks

Hi Lisa,
i have some questions about your review of LD.

mostly about battery life

english language is not my native so i dont understand one thing You wrote

-----
We got 6 hours of continuous MP3 playback with the screen turned off and watching a two hour video with brightness set to 66% used 50% of the battery's charge (we used headphones with both tests).
-----

this was one test? or two?
so the question - You got 6hours of mp3 playback and 2 hours of video with such brightness from one charge? (having 50% of charge left)
or You got 6 hours of mp3 playback from one charge and 2 hours of video playback from another charge (having 50% of charge left)
can You be so kind and explain this?

i own T5 and FS loox718 and Sony tj-35
on T5 i have about 6-7 hours of mp3 playback from SD card, LD has 300mah battery bigger than T5 but it has HDD, which east more energy than SD card.
so if the results of Your test was from one charge - i dont understand how it's possible.

and one comment about heap memory, and about it's pretty good size.
T3 has 12Mb, TC has 12Mb, Sony tj serie (35,37,27) have 8Mb heap, th55 has also more (i think 7Mb)
so ammount of heap memory on T5 and LD - is small and T5 and LD are not cheap
with my cheap sony tj35 (160 euro) i am able to play games using emulators and with T5 (380 euro) - i cannot

Thanks in advance and with best regards, Art.
