Fall is coming and that means new Pocket PCs, Pocket PC Phones and MS Smartphones running the new Windows Mobile 5.0 operating system are just around the corner. Quite a bit has changed (for the better) in Microsoft's latest mobile operating system, including new Today Screen plugins, an improved Internet Explorer and better MS Office apps. And don't forget persistent memory, which means your data will survive a complete battery drain. We give you a detailed tour of the new features, with screen shots to illustrate the point.

Nice overview! I'm still debating about moving to WM5 on my X50v. Dell will offer the upgrade next month, but if Netfront and great tools like Safe Reset don't work, it may not be worth the move.

No idea about Safe Reset, but several other PPC utilities do work such as Spb PocketPlus, BatteryPack and more. Those are already WM5 compatible and I'm sure most currently supported in production software will be made WM5 compatible if it's not already.
The folks at NetFront generally take longer than most developers to support a new OS. After all, we only got 3.2 with support for WM2003SE a few months ago. V.3.3 (Japanese) is supposed to add VGA support. Hopefully we won't have to wait 6 months for a version for WM5! In the meanwhile, IE mobile has gotten better, as a consolation.

Nice article! I'm definitely going to upgrade to WM5, especially since I just ordered an x50v last Friday when Dell Canada had an awesome one day deal on the x50v that included the upgrade CD. (to be shipped later)

Can PIE in WM5 be hacked into VGA like Netfront?

Haven't found a way yet. I'm sure the ingenious folks who made VGA hacks for WM2003SE will do the same for WM5 once they get their hands on a device.

Very nice article. Did you (or can you) test any of these other applications on 5.0?
