New HP iPAQ Pocket PC Phones at Mobility Summit: rw6800 and hw6900
      #23828 - 05/09/06 12:47 PM

While HP still isn't announcing a US release date or carrier for their upcoming iPAQ Pocket PC Phones, they did show them today in San Francisco at their annual Mobility Summit. We all know that the HP iPAQ hw6915 is coming to the US sometime this summer, but it looks like the rw6800 won't hit the states since it lacks the 850MHz band (even T-Mobile here in the US has been going with 850MHz phones for roaming purposes, though they have no native 850 coverage). The rw6800 is shipping in June in Asia.

At HP's Mobility Summit Today, we got our hands on the upcoming rw6800. We wish the photos were better but we were reduced to using our Treo 650 as our camera after both our Samsung and Olympus digicams died!

The iPAQ 6800 Pocket PC Phone (sibling to the XDA Atom), comes with HP's beloved flip cover, runs Windows Mobile 5, has a 416MHz Intel PXA272 XScale processor, WiFi 802.11b, Bluetooth, a 2 megapixel camera, FM radio, Mini SD slot, and is a Triband 900/1800/1900MHz GSM phone with EDGE and GPRS for data. It has 64 megs of RAM and 128 megs of flash ROM and a 1500 mAh battery. It has AKU2 with Exchange 2003 push email support. The rw6800 has two LEDs up front for wireless (left) and power (right) status. It has front facing stereo speakers and uses Phillips WideSound software. The 6800 comes with a mini USB sync cable (cradle is optional) and comes with a 2.5mm stereo headset with mic. HP is bundling the phone with PocketMusic, HP PhotoSmart, a Java VM, ModemLink (for DUN) and Cyberon Voice Commander.

HP iPAQ hw6900 (6915 model in the US)

Don't worry, the Disney blue and yellow color scheme isn't how it will ship. And that hand on the back is HP's new marketing imagery. As you can see in the photo, it has WiFi. Like the HP iPAQ hw6515, it has a built-in GPS and square resolution 240 x 240 pixel display and a thumb keyboard. It runs Windows Mobile 5 with AKU2, has a Mini SD slot, a quad band GSM radio with EDGE for data, Bluetooth 1.2 and runs on a peppy 416MHz processor. The camera version is in our hands, but a camera-less version may be available as well. For the US version, you'll get Microsoft Pocket Streets and Trips 2006 and a 60 day trial version of NaviSoft ($130 to upgrade to the full version). You can take photos with the camera and assign them to a given map location using the GPS. Our review will follow in the coming weeks.
