iPhone 5 Case Review: Keystone ECO MarineCase for iPhone 5 Review

Editor's Ratings (1-5): 4

What's Hot: Serious waterproof protection. Floating lanyard included. Simple installation.

What's Not: Specialized case not for everyday use.

The Keystone ECO MarineCase by Keystone is a true waterproof case (up to 20 ft) for iPhone 5. It's hefty, but if you intend to take your phone in or on the water, this is about as good as it gets while still allowing you to use it.

Size and Fit

The ECO MarineCase is big and bulky. This is the trade-off for the peace of mind a waterproof case provides. Your iPhone 5 nestles snugly inside, so rest assured it won't be rattling around in there.

Features and Quality

I've tested a number of waterproof cases in the past, and while all of them performed as advertised, some were notoriously difficult to install. Refreshingly, the ECO MarineCase does not suffer from this shortcoming. Through the use of a clever twist/lock top piece, the case opens in seconds, and securely closes just as fast, thanks to a secure hinge that ensures all the seals line up perfectly every time. In my tests, the case repelled water exactly as described. Just inspect the silicone screen cover for punctures before each use. Mine never ripped or failed, but with a $500-$700 (actual replacement value) phone inside, its worth your while to be sure.

The ECO MarineCase sets itself apart from other waterproof cases in a number of areas. First of all, it is rated to 20 feet. While most casual swimmers/snorkelers never go that deep, the extra protection is important because it's possible to subject your iPhone to an equivalent amount of pressure in just a few feet of water by moving it around while submerged, or even dropping it from an elevated position. Which brings us to its second standout feature: The included floating lanyard. With most waterproof cases, dropping an iPhone into deep water is nothing short of disastrous, even if its protective case keeps it bone dry at the bottom of Davy Jones' Locker. The floating lanyard will keep your phone floating nicely on the surface, and even allows you to put your arm through it for those times when you may not want to choose between swimming and leaving your phone behind. Of course, all this protection is moot if you can't actually use your phone in the water. The ECO MarineCase will allow you full access to the touch screen through the silicone face, and the clear polycarbonate back plate allows photographs and movies. You even have access to the volume buttons, although there is no headphone, power button, or mute switch support.

Style

The ECO MarineCase is not a stylish case. It's a big white rectangle with rounded edges and a bright yellow lanyard. Keystone has clearly chosen to build this with functionality in mind rather than fashion. The white case is easy to spot in dark water, and the yellow lanyard even more so. This isn't a daily case; it's built for a particular environment so it's not going to be for everybody.

Summary

The MarineCase by Keystone is a great waterproof case for your iPhone 5. As with all waterproof cases, however, follow the instructions, use with caution, and apply a little common sense to ensure you don't end up with a wet phone.
