Smartphone Case Review: UAG Aero, Navigator, Outland and Scout Case for Samsung Galaxy Note 3 Review

Editor's Ratings (1-5): 4.5

What's Hot: Unique looking, slim yet very protective, and stylish colors.

What's Not: Takes a bit of finesse to get the phone out of the case.

Urban Armor Gear is currently offering their signature case for the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 in four colors, each carries the name of UAG's convention. Scout for black themed cases, Navigator for white, Outland for rustic orange of the Outback and Aero for navy blue. As with most UAG cases, the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 case is well built with 2 layers of protection and it's very functional. The case also comes with a screen protector and a cleaning kit.

Design

The Urban Armor Gear case for the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 is a slim case yet very protective. The case has two layers of protection, fusing a hard outer shell with a soft impact resistance interior to help protect the large phone from any scratches, bumps and nicks to the back and sides of the phone and absorb shock from drops. The hard shell covers the entire back and wraps around the sides in some parts to give the phone a good structural support. The sides of the case use the softer rubber layer that's stiff and honeycombed to provide a better grip. The top and bottom of the case also use rubber to make it easy to install the phone in the case and to work with the ports easier. It's quite easy to put the case on, but thanks to its hard shell and stiff sides, it takes some practice to get it off.

The UAG case for the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 looks and feels rugged even in a slim form and weighs only 1.8 ounces. The Aero version is in a light navy blue (pictured here), and the Outland version has an intense reddish orange color. The Navigator is very close to pure white and Scout is close to pure black. All versions of the case have black rubber sides. The UAG Galaxy Note 3 case comes with a heavy-duty film protector that covers the entire front glass on the phone except the Home button, the earpiece and the sensors and front camera.

Features

The Urban Armor Gear case for the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 is a very functional case thanks to its well-designed button covers and cutouts. The UAG case covers the power button and the volume rocker with rubber buttons. These buttons are flexible and protective of the phone's buttons. The case has generous cutouts for the 3.5mm audio jack on the top of the phone, and the pen silo opening and the sync/charge port on the bottom so that you can use headphones, the digital pen and syncing/charging cables easily while the phone is in the case. The case does add some thickness, so your accessories with tight fit or short connectors for the sync/charge port might not work with the this case.

The Urban Armor Gear case for the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 has cutouts for the IR port, mics and speaker as well as the rear camera and flash. The camera cutout has a black frame that helps prevent flash from creating glare and the camera lens has a full view through the cutout. The case also raises the edges on the front to elevate the screen from touching anything when you put the phone face down.

Conclusion

Urban Armor Gear has created a unique look for their mobile phone cases that seems rugged but manages to keep the form slim. The case is very protective with a layer of hard shell and a layer of soft material, and your phone gets the best of both worlds: hard shell for strong protection and the soft core for easier handling and a better grip. The case comes with a nice screen protector and we love every color/version in this collection. The case offers easy access to all ports and cameras and it protects the buttons from wear and tear. The case is quite easy to install but it takes some fussing to take off.
