I'm one of the many Tungsten E owners who would love the have the opportunity to use wifi and I know the card offered by Sandisk is only for the Zire 71 but as I was reading through the forum I saw mention of how Sandisk was doing this internally. Has anyone tested out the card on a T/E yet? Results?

I to understand your griefs as I am in the same boat and wonder if anyone has tried. I can't seem to find anyone that has. I also wonder once the new PalmOne cards ship out for the T3 and Zire 72, if anyone will try that on a E. There is the Enfora portfolio option which I am sure you are aware of. But I don't want to spend that much, plus what is the point in having a small slim piece of machinery stuck in a bulky bag. All I can do at this point is wait for some one to come up with an answer.

Forgot, check out this link. ZDnet Supposedly SanDisk says that the PalmOne SD card may work with older models. But the question also is will the drivers be compatible. Very interesting.

We have the new PalmOne SD WiFi card in for review, and it only comes with drivers for the T3 and Zire 72. Given the low power spec on the Tungsten E, it seems that no one can make a card for the E that doesn't void the E's warranty. It's not a driver issue.

Lisa,
Thanks. It's just annoying because I bought the T/E for it's value and my thinking was that I didn't need wifi then, but could always upgrade later because according to Palm's documentation (and on Palm's website) it says it'll accept SDIO cards. -- now all the sudden it's a power issue?!?
It's misleading of Palm to say the least . . .
I'm glad that at least someone like Enfora is trying to fill a (big) need, but I think they're missing a mark. Folks are looking for something minimal and not bulky. Someone needs to develop something like the Xircom sled that was used for the m500 series but this time only smaller/thinner. If they can do that for a $99 price point then they may have a hit . . .

I can understand why you're bummed. If you've got SDIO, you expect to be able to use it for all types of cards .
On another note, I can tell you that PalmOne's new WiFi card consumes a significant amount of power (more than the SanDisk, it seems so far), and I can see why it wouldn't work on the Tungsten E.

Since Palm has released its drivers for the Palm Wi-Fi card, has anyone tried to get the SanDisk Wi-Fi cards to now run on, say, a T3? In other words, will the Palm drivers work with the SanDisk card on a T3?

I tried it, and it says "the card in the SDIO slot is not a palmOne supported WiFi card". So it won't work. Looks like you'll need to get palmOne's card for the T3.

That's too bad ... that sounds like a simple flag in the driver that is set to detect a hardware code from the Palm card, thereby rejecting the SanDisk cards. I hope someone patches that to spoof the driver.
Thanks for checking ... I would have liked to use the SanDisk cards.

Hi The Sandisk WIFI card version 2.1 for the PALM Zire 71 works on the PALM Tungsten E. Do the install that comes with the CD enclosed in the package using the Quick Install Option for the Zire71. Then you MUST download and install the newly released patch PALM has put out for the SDIO slot specifically for the TUNGSTEN E --> http://www.palmone.com/us/support/downloads/tungstene/sdioupdate.html Then follow the instructions for installing and setting up the WIFI software once its on the Tungsten. Hint: U will have to experiment with the IP adresses of you router. If it is a Linksys make sure that the router is broadcasting the name Linksys or whatever you have it set at. At some point during your first connection it assumes your workgroup is Linksys and not the workgroup of you network so make sure you enter Linksys (or your broadcast ID) when it asks for your workgroup or domain name. The signal strength is about 1/2 of a Linksys 802.11b card. I use Blazer as a web browser because the one they ship with the Sandisk card only works with the Zire 71. The power consumption is huge. U can literally see the battery monitor shrink before your eyes. But it works./

Question is "How long can you actually use the WI-FI card on the E, when you can actually see it draining?" Sounds like that is why SanDisk said all along that it would work on the E, but they didn't release it for the E because it is not feasible to use it for 10 minutes.

Hi, BATTERY LIFE T/E WIFI Fully charged about 20-30 minutes. The trick is to turn if off when you want to stop wifi-ing and then turn it back on . Download Batmon software (freeware) it reallocates the power away from the sdio card by using the power update function it comes with after you turn back on the unit you'll see the monitor go the other way about 10% pts. So you can squeeze about 10 minutes more usage out of it. I tried this. If you need quick web access on and off its fine, but I agree if you need serious browsing ability it falls short, but so do most other options except Enfora's T/E wifi hookup which probably can outlast the T/E power supply in normal mode without accessories .

20-30 minutes isn't bad considering. i wouldn't use the t/e to do a lot of power surfing, just a sync/download of email and update my avantgo . . . this gives me (a little) hope

Well you both have a good point about the occasional usage. I probably would only use it for checking e-mails and the status at my worksite. The hardcore usage would not be extremely enjoyable anyhow on the tiny screen. Checking e-mail on the fly is very tempting. Yet I still worry about any problems down the road using the card. So I think I will wait and see if you experience any slight issues within the next few weeks or so. On another note, what is the best browser out there to use with the card? Because I recall that the one that comes with the card won't work on the E. Thanks for trying this out on your E and letting us all know. It is about time someone had some guts to give it a shot.

HI YOU ARE WELCOME... U are correct the Browser that ships with the SanDisk wifi does not work on the E. I E-mailed them about it and they were very testy and started to give me a lengthy dissertation on why this and why that; voiding warrant, etc...(it almost sounded like a campaign against the E) They put out a message telling you on execution that the device is not compatible with their software. So for now there is no support for the E. I was dissappointed because the screenshots are great.
I Have only tired a few on the T/E and have decided upon Handspring Blazer simply because it doesn't have any quirks, doesn't require a proxy server. It also Adjusts the web page for a best fit and is pretty quick with a weak signal and most of all doesn't blow up in the middle of things. It seems to work well with the SD wifi card and and through Softick's USB TCP/IP setup for hardwire surfing etc....
The other one that comes close to this is from a Japanese company called XIINO They have a demo version 30 days Xiino 3.0. If u need the URL let me know. This browser makes the page fit on the screen more often than Blazer but it has a few quirks. The Google Japanese page is the home page so you have to find the English Link hit that and then browse unless you can read Japanese. Even if you force the Google URL it reverts back to Japansese SO its a bit annoying. Although I hear there is a Google/Palm page desgined specifically for PDAs. Other than that it is clean fast and works with sandisk wifi on the E.
Proxy Server is Okay but you need IP's-Forget it if your on the road PALMSCAPE intermittent problems Handbrowser just stinks on the E Enfora 2.0 is buggy on the E. Maybe 6.0 is okay, but I haven't tried it.

The same thing happened to me with a T3 and the PalmOne card itself! After several hours with Palm service and Palm Store service, hard resets and other stuff, I'm still not sure what the deal is, but I have to wait another three weeks for a replacement card.... brenecREMOVESPAM@rpi.edu

I was curious if those that have tried the Sandisk card on the E, and got it to work, if you have had any issues thus far? It has been a couple weeks now and am getting anxious to check my e-mails on my E. Any feedback would be appreciated.

I am looking to access web / e-mail from my Tungsten e. From what I read so far, there is a fairly expensive option... Enfora Wireless http://www.palminfocenter.com/view_story.asp?ID=6986
The WI-FI SD cards don't seem to work with the TE yet.......
Is there an option for under 80 bucks? How about my old Nokia 3360 with the IR port. Can I get on-line via my 3360?
Another thought, by the time I bought a wirless keyboard, some extra memory, etc - I am thinking I should have just bought a cheaper laptop. Just wondering if anybody else is thinking the same thing...?
Please advise if you can help.....
Thanks! Mike

Yes, you should be able to use your Nokia via the IR port to get on the web with the Tungsten E. That will save you some cash :-)

Does anyone out there know how I could connect the TE to my Nokia 3360. I need specific instructions or pointed to a web page that will explain.
Btw, I use MSN dial up for my current Internet access at home.
Any help is greatly appreciated.
Thanks, Mike
