iPad Game Review: History Egypt Engineering an Empire HD
Reviewed by Steven Scarpitti

History Egypt originally caught my eye because of its striking similarity to Sid Meiers Civilization games, History Egypt has a great resemblance to this classic franchise.

Gameplay

History Egypt offers a single player gameplay which is the main part of the game and a multiplayer game that offers a two player experience on one iPad. The single player mode offers nine campaigns to play through. Campaigns use a map spread with a layout of towns and a set of objectives, towns have plots of land to construct building to upgrade your income, your selection of troops, and your population. You can take over one of your opponents cities by fighting a hex based strategy battle, battles are fought on small maps and are more a battle of numbers than a real strategy battle unless your troop numbers are close.

There are a good variety of troops to recruit depending on how you develop each of your towns. You can construct utilities building that can provide gold or population growth, you can also construct military buildings that lets you recruit advanced units or provides your units with a boost. There is also the option to use diplomacy to spy, pay tribute, or declare war with one of your opponents. Depending on the maps objectives there are normally a number of ways to achieve your goals.

Multiplayer mode offers two different ways to play both of which are two player games on the same device. Single battle mode offers each player the choice of up to any six units to take into a single hex based strategy battle. Campaign mode offers a full featured version of the original single player game but against a human opponent on one of five campaign maps.

History Egypt features a nice tutorial that explains all the ins and outs of the game and will have you playing the game with ease in no time.

Graphics

The Graphics look nice and colorful with a nice amount of detail. The touch controls work perfectly and are very intuitive for this type of game. The interface allows you to easily see all the useful information and access any part of your development without going through lots of menus.

Sound

The background music is pretty standard, it's nice and relaxing and fits with the game very well. There are also nice sound effects for most actions in the game. The only thing missing is the ability to play your own music.

Conclusion

Overall History Egypt is a fun game that should appeal to most simulation/strategy game fans especially those that enjoy the Civilization game titles. There is a good amount a replay with various ways to complete the campaigns and a nice multiplayer option if you know someone else who enjoys these games. History Egypt is well worth the asking price and has had a couple sales already so keep an eye out if you want to get it on the cheap.

Rating (scale of 1 to 5):

Graphics: -4- The graphics look nice and detailed, on par with a couple year old computer game.
Sound: -4- Nice background music with good sound effects, only thing missing is custom music.
Controls: -5- Controls work well and make this game feel like a top quality game.
Gameplay: -4- Gameplay is fun and enjoyable but is missing some of the depth of the big name games like Civilization.
