Nintendo Wii - Questions and Answers FAQ
      #25257 - 09/21/06 04:13 PM

I made a list of many of the most frequently-asked questions that keep getting asked on various gaming message boards and answered them in a question and answer format. Maybe this will help those of you out who have a lot of questions about the upcoming Nintendo Wii system and its many features and launch details.

When will the Wii be released?
The Wii will be released on November 19th in the US, December 2nd in Japan, December 7th in Australia and New Zealand, and December 8th in Europe.

What colors will the Wii be available in at launch?
The Wii will only be available in WHITE at launch.

Are more Wii system colors being planned in the future?
Nintendo has stated that more Wii system colors will be available in 2007, but for the time being the company will only produce white Wii systems in order to keep Wii buyers from only buying their favorite colors.

What Virtal Console games are going to be available at launch?
So far, these are the only confirmed Virtual Console games, with the ones that will be available on launch day marked as such. Nintendo has stated that they will have 10 new Virtual Console games available each month.

Genesis Games: 1-6MB
SNES Games: Around 1-6MB

Where can I preorder the Nintendo Wii system?
So far in the US, only Nintendo World in NYC and Gamecrazy are taking Wii preorders, but other retailers are likely to begin taking them soon now that the launch information has been released. Allocation numbers are what most retailers are likely waiting on in order to avoid the debacle that happened with the Xbox 360 launch.

Should I camp out at my local game store or will there be plenty of Wii systems available on launch day?
Although there will likely be plenty of Wii systems on launch day to meet demand, we've seen many console launches over the past two generations be met with shortages, so if you want to guarantee yourself a Wii system, you should preorder where possible and if not, you might want to get to your local game retailer a few hours before they open on the launch day to be sure.

Can I use my Nintendo Gamecube memory card with the Wii?
Yes, the Wii system has a memory card slot for your Gamecube memory cards.

Can I use my Gamecube controller with the Wii?
The Wii system has 4 Gamecube controller ports so you can use your Gamecube controllers with the system.

How will we play the classic Virtual Console games?
Nintendo is selling a Wii Classic Controller for $20 that can be used for all Virtual Console games.

Will the Wii play my Gamecube games?
Yep. The Wii will play all Gamecube games.

Can I use my Gamecube component cable with my Wii system?
No. The Gamecube component cable only had output connections for VIDEO and then you had to still use your other composite cable in order to get AUDIO, which worked fine on most Gamecube systems since they had two A/V ports. The Wii only has one Multi-A/V port so if you were to use your Gamecube component cable, you couldn't get any sound at all, and that's assuming that the Gamecube component cable would work at all on the Wii.

Do I need a memory card to store my game saves on?
The Wii has a built-in 512MB of flash memory that can hold many game saves, and you can also use a separate SD memory card if you wanted to or if you began to fill up the internal memory.

Where do I store all of my downloaded Virtual Console games and wallpapers? You can store them either on the internal 512MB of flash memory or use an external SD memory card.

Can I play my Turbografx-16 CDs and Sega CDs on the Wii?
No. That's not to say that this feature might not be made available at a later time, but at the current time, no plans to make the actual Turbo CDs and Sega CDs playable on the Wii console exist.

Can I play DVDs or CDs on my Wii?
Music CDs can be played but despite early reports that the Wii would allow DVD playback, the feature was cut for the final version of the Wii and now the Wii will NOT play DVDs.

Can we save our downloaded Virtual Console games to CD or DVD?
No. The optical drive of the Wii is "read-only" and cannot burn save files or game files to CD or DVD.

Where do I put the Wii Sensor Bar?
The Wii sensor bar can be placed above or below your television screen.

Is the Wii Remote rechargeable or do I need batteries?
The Wii Remote is NOT rechargeable in itself, but rechargeable batteries can be used as well as regular non-rechargeable batteries.

Will every NES, SNES, Genesis, and TG16 game be available for download or only the hit titles?
It's not likely that every single title from each system will be available on the Virtual Console. Licensing issues will keep a lot of classic games from being released on the Wii Virtual Console, but Nintendo has promised that the Wii Virtual Console library will provide a HUGE number of classic games over the life-span of the Wii console.

How big is the Wii system?
The exact dimensions of the Wii are: 8.5" x 6" x 1.95".

Does the Wii system have to be set up vertically or can I lay it horizontally?
The Wii system can be situated either vertically or horizontally.

How much will Wii games cost?
Nintendo is recommending a $49.95 retail price, much like their 1st party titles will be priced at, but third party publishers are allowed to use their own discretion.

Are the Wii graphics as good as the Xbox 360 or Playstation 3?
The Wii is not capable of Xbox 360 or PS3-quality visuals, but the Wii is closely compared as being a little better than the original Xbox in terms of visual capabilties.

Do I have to have broadband in order to play my Wii?
Yes, you will likely have to have a broadband connection in order to use the online capabilities of the Wii much like you do with the DS system.

I don't have a wireless broadband connection, so how do I connect my Wii to the internet?
Nintendo will be selling a USB 2.0 Network Adapter that will allow Wii users to connect their broadband connection directly to their Wii system.

Do I have to stand up in order to play the Wii games?
While some games will obviously require you to stand up to play, many Wii games will allow you to play from a normal seated position.

If I don't get a Wii on launch day, will I still be able to get my hands on one before Christmas?
Nintendo seems pretty confident that they will have plenty of Wii systems on store shelves throughout the holiday season so it shouldn't be a problem. But if you are worried about getting a system, it might be a good idea to grab one as soon as possible just to be on the safe side.

Is the Wii region-free or not?
Although NOA originally announced that the Wii system would be region-free, it was later corrected and made public that the Wii games will, in fact, be region-coded.

Will Nintendo make games that use the DS and Wii systems cooperatively?
Nintendo has stated that there will be games for both the DS and Wii system that will allow players to use both systems cooperatively. There has been no official word yet on any specific titles or features, however.

How do I connect my DS to my Wii system?
They connect wirelessly, so no extra cable is needed.

Does the Wii have parental controls?
Yes the Wii does have built-in parental controls.

What is WiiConenct24 and what does it do?
WiConnect24 allows the Wii system to have access to your online connection even when the system is technically turned off. This will allow for updates and downloads even when you're not actually using your Wii system.

What are Wii Channels?
Wii channels are similar to TV channels. The Wii will have many different channels. One example is the weather channel that will give you up-to-date weather forecasts using your internet connection. Other channels, like the shopping channel, will allow you to purchase Virtual Console games as well as other Nintendo goodies, right from your Wii system.

Can I surf the web on my Wii?
Yes. Nintendo is offering the Opera web browser for use on the Wii system and it will function much like the computer version of the program does.

Does the Wii have an internal hard drive?
No, the Wii has an internal 512MB of flash memory for storage purposes.

Will all Wii games be widescreen?
Nintendo has stated that most Wii games will be made to take advantage of the 480p 16x9 Widescreen format.

Will the Wii Remote or Nunchuck Controllers be available in different colors at launch?
Not likely since the console itself will only be available in white. Plus no word has come from Nintendo that different colored controllers will be made available anytime soon.

Does the Wii Remote have a rumble feature built-in?
Yes. The Wii Remote has built-in rumble function as well as a built-in speaker.

How far from the Wii can I be and still use my wireless Wii Remote?
Nintendo claims the wireless range of the Wii Remote is 35 feet and in truth, why would you want to be any further away than that anyway.

What buttons are on the Wii Remote controller?
The Wii Remote has the typical Nintendo D-pad as well as the following buttons:
"A" button
"B" button
"Power" button
"1" button
"2" button
"+" button
"-" button
"Home" button
"Sync" button (under the battery compartment)

What buttons does the Nunchuck controller feature and how does it connect to the Wii Remote?
The Nunchuck controller features an analog stick as well as a "C" and "Z" button on the front side of the controller for easy finger access. The short Nunchuck controller cord plugs into the bottom of the Wii Remote.

Is the Wii drive bay really illuminated by a blue light?
Yes. The opening of the Wii drive bay does imminate with a blue light much the same as you see in most pictures of the system.

Will the Wii play the actual NES, SNES, Genesis, and TG16 cartridges?
No. All of the classic Virtual Console games will be available for download over the system's internet connection and saved to either the Wii's internal flash memory or an SD card.

What companies are currently planning support for the Wii Virtual Console?
So far, these are the third party companies that have already signaled support for the Virtual Console. Konami, Atlus, D4E, Masaya, Capcom, Takara Tomy, Sega, Sunsoft, Kemco, Hal Laboratories, Irem, Tecmo, Taito, Koei, Enterbrain, Netfarm, Paon, Chun Soft, Bandai-Namco, Jaleco, Square-Enix, Banpresto, and Hudson.

What about the light gun for the Wii?
It's not actually a light gun, but more of a shell for the Wii Remote to fit into. So far, no word on whether or not this attachment will be available for the system's launch.

Is it true that Gamestop is only allowing people to trade in game stuff in order to preorder a Wii system?
This was only done as a marketing test in Hawaii and doesn't have anything to do with Gamestop stores in the rest of the US. Gamestop is not currently taking preorders as most stores are still waiting on allocation estimates.

Does the Wii Classic controller come with any free Wii Points?
No. As far as we know, there are no free Wii Points with the purchase of the Classic controller.

Up to how many Wii Remotes can be used with the system at once?
Up to 4 Wii controllers can be used at once with the Wii system, each using it's own wireless bluetooth technology.

What exactly are the Wii specs?
729 MHz IBM PowerPC "Broadway" CPU
243 MHz ATI "Hollywood" GPU
24MBs "main" 1T-SRAM

Two USB 2.0 ports Compatible with up to four wireless Wii-motes
Self-loading media drive
Accepts 12cm Wii and 8cm GCN discs; no DVD movies

Will there be any original 2-D games for the Wii?
Nintendo has stated that there will likely be some original games developed exclusively for the Virtual Console. Some of these are very likely to be 2-D since many of the classic games themselves are.

Is it possible for a game to make use of dual Wii Remote controllers?
It's certainly possible, although no word yet on any games that will make use of this control scheme.

Is it likely that any Virtual Console games that didn't make it to the US might be translated and released on the Virtual Console?
While I wouldn't say it would be likely, it might depend on just how popular the Virtual Console becomes. If there was a big demand for a certain game that was never localized, it might be a possibility. We've already seen several non-US games translated for the GBA system.

When will we start seeing Wii commercials on TV?
I would guess around mid-late October. Nintendo normally doesn't start the marketing blitz very early, but the Wii is definitely the type of console that needs to be shown in action to really attract people's attention. It shouldn't be too much longer until we see the Wii commercials popping up on Nick and Cartoon Network as usual.

What about playing the Wii on an LCD or LCD HDTV? I've read that LCD televisions have response lag?
If you want to take full advantage of the Wii progressive scan output of 480p, you must have an LCD TV and it must support up to 480p output. Let me warn you, if you plan on buying or using an LCD or LCD HDTV with your Wii system or any game system, you need to make sure it has a fast response time. I'd recommend something in the 8ms-12ms range if you want to avoid the response lag times. Older LCD TVs often had long response times, and this can make it to where what you're imputing on your game controller takes longer to refresh on the LCD screen and you'll notice a pause. The lower the number in the response time, the faster the LCD screen refreshes. Anything over 12ms and you're going to start noticing the lag. Just be thorough when you start shopping for an LCD TV to use with any of your game systems.

What about the Virtual Console games. Will they be able to output in progressive scan on my LCD TV like the Wii games will?
Yes, in an article from EGM magazine this topic was covered. Here's a clip from that article: Regarding backward compatibility, EGM's article noted that all Virtual Console games will be progressive-scan enabled, but will not feature improved graphics (meaning no updated game models; article did not discuss framerates).

Will there be a shortage of Wii consoles on launch day or in the weeks thereafter?
Although it's impossible to be 100% sure, we do know that there will be at least 1,000,000 Wii systems available for sale in the US on launch day, Nov. 19. That should be plenty for a launch, especially considering the Playstation 3 system will be launching just two days before the Wii launch. It's always a good idea to pre-order, and if you can, do so.

Is the Nunchuck controller motion sensitive like the Wii Remote is?
Yes, the Nunchuck attachment is motion sensitive as well as the Wii Remote. In fact, Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess makes use of the Wii Remote and the Nunchuck's motion sensing capabilities.

I've heard that there will now be Commodore 64 games on the Wii system's Virtual Console. Is this true?
Epyx is bringing out some of their Commodore 64 titles on the Virtual Console system. The first group of Epyx titles that will be released on Virtual Console are:

Impossible Mission
Impossible Mission 2
Summer Games
Summer Games 2
Winter Games
Pitstop
Jumpman Junior

Hey, thanks for the kind words. They're much appreciated. I originally put this together due to the huge amount of misinformation that was being posted on the message boards regarding Nintendo Wii information. I thought that since I had gone to the trouble to put it all together, I might as well post it on here. Again, thanks for reading.

I agree, very impressive and great amount of information, thanks. I have an additional question that no one seems to be able to answer, there probably isn't a definitive answer at this point, but I'll ask any way. Will I be able to play a VC game, say Mario Kart 64 on my console against someone else on another console over the internet? I'm wondering if this is possible now, not likely, possible in future, or because the original game was never able to be played online, it will never be able to be played online. I know that's a lot to throw out at ya, but I'd thought I'd pick your brain after getting so many don't know we'll have to wait and sees. -Thanks

Based on what Nintendo has said regarding being able to play Virtual Console games online, I'd say the answer is no. Now that's not to say that these features can't be added to certain popular VC titles, but it might be more work than some developers are willing to put into a classic title. But it's at least "possible." If I hear anything, I'll be sure and post it on here.

The Wii Classic Controller plugs into the same end of the Wii Remote that the Nunchuck Controller does. So in essence, it is wireless as well.

Thank you for the post! I have a couple of questions. I am living in Japan now and for the next few years. Then I will be moving back to the States. It seems like the best option for me would be to buy an American system and have it shipped over. I know the Japanese games probably won`t work on my American system, but what about hardware, like extra controllers? Thanks for your help.

Well we now know that the Wii is indeed region-locked, which means that only games from the same region as the console will function on it. As for hardware like controllers and such, those should be standard as the cost to modify them would be too much to worry about so you can use accessories from Japan on a US console, just not the games. No word yet on the region-coding for the Virtual Console yet, so that's still up in the air. I hope this answered your question. My advice is, if you don't speak Japanese, you might want to go ahead and import a US Wii and then import your games. Might cost you more, but you'll be able to understand them better and then when you come back to the states, you'll be in good shape.

My biggest concern for a while has been the cable connecting the Nunchuck to the main remote, every picture I've seen makes it look like it's only 18-24" long, I'm worried I'm going to get too involved in some game and accidentally yank the Nunchuck cable out of the wand remote. Have they actually announced how long that cable will be and how easily it can be disconnected? (i.e., should I be worried about breaking one or the other if I do accidentally yank them apart too quickly?)

Thanks for a great FAQ!

There's a video on IGN of Matt playing the fishing game in Zelda: Twilight Princess and it looks like the cord is getting in his way a little bit while he's performing the reeling motion. The cable isn't very long, so it's something that you'll have to adjust to with the games that require both the Wii Remote and the Nunchuck controller and a wide range of motion. I haven't read anything about a longer cable or an extension, and I seriously doubt there will be one anytime near launch if we haven't heard about it yet.

Choose the "Matt Teaches Us to Fish" video and see what I mean...

The Wii will NOT be region free despite early reports from Nintendo of America that first party Wii titles would contain no region locks. NOA has since recanted that announcement and made it clear that the Wii will be region locked in all territories including the US.

As for titles I plan to pick up on Wii launch day, I've already pre-ordered the following titles:

Rayman Raving Rabbids
Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess
Excite Truck
Red Steel

These are 4 very strong titles judging from what I've seen while researching the Wii launch titles. I had planned on purchasing Wii Sports but now that it's a pack-in, I won't have to. : ) These 4 games plus Wii Sports should keep me busy until Super Mario Galaxy hits store shelves.

I'd have to say that the Zelda title would be a must-have at launch and Rayman Raving Rabids looks really fun, although it's not a traditional Rayman-type platformer as I was hoping it would be, rather more of a mini-game collection similar to the Mario Party titles. Check out IGN or GAMESPOT and watch some of the videos and trailers of all the launch titles to help you make up your mind.

There is no cost to use Nintendo's online service or surf the web with the Opera browser. If you already have an internet service provider, you're all set! And if you download the Opera browser before June 2007, it's free as well. It's the gift that just keeps on giving. : )

Thanks for the Q&A.

I do have a question regarding "online" abilities. The X-Box and 360, and probably the PS3, have internal network setups, meaning you can play multiplayer games via an internal network without going thru X-Box Live. Does the Wii have something similar, a direct connection more or less?

I know Nintendo has put together an online gaming service for use with the Wii that is set to debut shortly after the launch, but I don't know if it has an internal network setups so you can play without using their online service. The online service Nintendo is offering is free of charge, unlike Xbox Live, but I'll do some checking and see if I can find out a more official answer to your question.

One small note: It's going around many message boards that Gamestop and EB Games are going to be taking Wii pre-orders beginning Friday, October 13th. There is a $50 deposit required that will go towards the final purchase price of the Wii system. Also keep in mind that there were quite a few people already waiting in line when these stores opened today for the PS3 preorders and the PS3 preorders were gone within minutes of most stores opening their doors.

Thanks for looking into it. I know that the service will be free, but there are/will be times when the service isn't 100% functional, also add to it that we don't know how well it will preform when millions of people are playing the same game. In addition X-Box has the ability to network multiplayer games that don't have the ability to do multiplier via Live. With such setups like VPN, this comes in handy.

I know that the gamecube controller can be used for the game cube games but will it also work with the WII games?

If this hasn't changed, it was said that it will be up to the developer. Reports have stated that you can play both the Marvel and Call of Duty with either controller. There has even been hints that the new Smash game will also use the GameCube controller.

What is the largest external memory that you can purchase for the WII? Is Sandisk the only company that makes the gaming version memory for the WII? Also, what are your recommendations as it relates to buying external memory with the system.(is it necessary to get right away or can I wait)

I doubt that Sandisk is going to be the only company that makes the memory, there are always third party versions, but it is most likely the safest bet to stick with whatever is the offical memory card. As for size, look at the sizes of the cards now. I doubt you will need one right away if you are only using the system for gaming and not transporting information to or from a pc or another Wii.

Wii points are what you use to purchase content on the virtual console, such as NES games and what not.

If you are talking about how much memory or wii points an item costs, then I would say yes it would be on the game itself. If you are talking about the GameCube controller, it probably will be up to developer, safe bet if you think it will use the GameCube controller, research it on the net.

Several companies make the SD cards. I believe 4GB is the largest one so far, but it's pretty expensive at the moment. As larger cards come out, the smaller sizes get cheaper. I have always had good luck with Sandisk, so that's the brand I normally stick with. I have still not gotten a reply on the internal network situation of the Wii but I will post it on here the second I hear back from them.

I got to Game Stop at 9 and there were already 27 people in line and they only had 20 preorders available. Me and one of the other guys there went over to ebgames, but they were already sold out as well. Guess I'll be camping out at Walmart. Does anyone have any advice on how early I should get to Walmart on the 18th in order to get a Wii system at midnight? Also do you know what games for the Sega Genesis and NEC Turbographx16 will be available at launch?

Since there will be over 1 million units for the North American launch, you should be able to grab one as long as you get there a little early. I'd recommend you get there later in the afternoon around 3pm and check to see if a line has formed. Then it's just a matter of how early you want to hop in line and get ready to wait. Don't forget, if you miss the Walmart midnight launch, you can always hit Best Buy the next morning as they generally get the largest allotment of systems on launch day.

As for the Genesis and TG-16 games available at launch, here they are:

TG-16:
Bonk's Adventure
New Adventure Island
R-Type

Genesis
Altered Beast
Ristar
Sonic the Hedgehog
Columns
Toe Jam & Earl
Golden Axe
Ecco the Dolphin

Commodore 64
Jumpman Jr.
Pitstop
Summer Games
Summer Games II
Winter Games
Impossible Mission
Impossible Mission II

NES:
Legend of Zelda
Super Mario Bros.
Donkey Kong
Mario Bros.

Super NES:
Super Mario World
Legend of Zelda: Link to the Past

Nintendo 64:
Super Mario 64

The Wii has built-in wireless, so if you have a wireless internet connection or wireless router, you don't need anything additional. If you do not have a wireless connection, you will need to purchase the $25 Nintendo USB LAN adapter that plugs into the USB slot on the Wii system. Then you can just plug in your Ethernet cable into your Wii and off you go. There will be no online games at the launch of the Wii, but Nintendo has promised that they are coming.

I have been looking into memory cards for the Wii and I am not sure what will work and what won't. Does the memory card have to be a gaming SD card or can a regular flash SD card. I have found on Ebay the SD cards to be half the price of what nintendo is selling them for. Does anyone know the specs for the memory cards?

Any standard SD card will work, transfer speeds are the only difference and are very minimal for what the Wii will use them for. Does your cable modem have the Ethernet cable (looks like a slightly fatter phone cable) slots. If so you can just buy the Nintendo USB LAN adapter for $25 and plug into it that way.

Nintendo has stated that more color variations of the Wii will be available next year, but for the time being, in order to keep retail numbers up, Nintendo is sticking with just the white color. As for a good HDTV, I bought one of the white Samsung 32" LCD HDTVs the other day and it's a beauty. Samsung and Sharp both offer outstanding LCD HDTVs that offer 16x9 widescreen. Shop around and you can generally find a good deal online.

Well there's Super Paper Mario that was moved over from the Gamecube, as well as a rumored Mario Golf title from Camelot. I'm sure there will be no lack of Mario titles on the Wii, but Super Mario Galaxy would have to be the main game most fans are looking forward to at the moment.

What would a good size memory card be for the Wii? Should I go really big if I plan to download alot of old games or if I just plan on playing the new games and saving my progress should I go with a smaller memory card? Also, will I be able to save downloaded games to the memory card and transport it to another Wii and use it there?

Nintendo has shown the "Zapper" attachment at some of the trade shows in which the Wii Remote is placed inside the Gun shell. I'm sure we'll see more "shells" at different points, depending on which companies want to make use of them. There was a picture of a plastic Link's Sword attachment shell on Play-Asia's web site a few months ago, but I haven't seen or read anymore about it lately. I'll do some more looking around and post anything I can find on it.

I seriously doubt that, especially given that the downloaded games will likely be tied to your console or the serial number. With copy potection, I just can't see that being an option. Can you see it now - all of these SD memory cards on ebay just chock full of downloaded VC games for sale, at a bargain price of course. : )

While that's certainly possible, it will all depend on getting the proper drivers onto the Wii in order to make those different brands of USB Flash Drives functional. There's still so much about the Wii we don't know yet, even just 3 weeks away from launch.

Yes, you'll need the USB LAN Adapter that plugs into the USB port on the back of the Wii system. I've decided to get the USB LAN Adapter myself, since I already have a router that I use with my laptop and Xbox 360.

Hi,

One thing this faq doesn't seem to answer (nor anywhere I've looked) and I'm desperate to know - does the supplied power supply support 110 to 230v like the iPod power supply, for example? Or, is the unit supplied with a power supply local to each region - as in, the UK takes 230v only whilst the US takes 110v?

I ask because I get my Wii in the UK and then I'm off to the Caribbean where it's 110v. All my iPod charger needs to work is a simple plug adapter, and I'm hoping this would be the same for the wii too.

Thanks,

Alex

Yes, the downloaded classic games are on their own Wii channel, which is basically a menu system to organize everything. It's very intuitive and easy to navigate.

As for the power adapter, most power adapters are no auto-switch as far as current goes, but Nintendo is barely releasing any specs on the Wii AT ALL, let alone something that specific, but I'll try to find out if I can.

Well since the Americas covers pretty much the US, Canada, and Mexico, and there will supposedly be close to 1 million units for all of the Americas, I'd say about 200,000 give or take. Now keep in mind that's not an official number as Nintendo would never narrow it down THAT much. But I'd bet around 700,000 will hit the US, 200,000 will hit Canada, and somewhere in the neighborhood of 100,000 or less units to hit Mexico on launch day. My advice is that if you can preorder, then do so. If not, get to the store early on launch day and you should be okay.

Hi, I was wondering whether I will actually need a computer to use a Wii? I understand I will need broadband (and therefore I'll need an internet service provider), but does that imply I will need a computer as a 'middleman'?? Thanks in advance.

Sorry I missed your question. To be honest, the Wii controller can sense the speed of the movement, but most reviewers have already stated that in all of the games so far, you can just as easily pull off the moves with very slight flicks of the wrist as you can swinging a long looping stroke. That leaves it up to you as to how involved in the game you get as far as the motion of the controller goes. Now that doesn't mean that later on developers can't program in more sensitivity into the Wii remote and sensor bar, but for now, there's no set way to swing the Wiimote.

I played some Wii Sports Tennis, and it made the same movements whether I swung the Wiimote in long strokes like I would a real tennis racket or just flicked it very slightly with my wrist. The Wii sensor bar does react to the 3-D space between it and the Wii Remote so it's definitely possible to MAKE players have to use accurate strokes and movements of the Remote, but so far, doesn't look like any games are making serious use of it yet. Maybe in time.

As for the other question, you just need a broadband connection. A computer is not necessary. You will need the LAN adapter if you plan to plug a cable into the Wii, as the Wii only has built-in Wireless, which would mean you'd need a wireless router of some type in order to use it.

You use the Classic controller for playing classic N64 games. Originally it was rumored that the Gamecube controller could be used, but that has since been addressed and you'll have to use the Classic controller instead. And even the button arrangements are going to be different on the Classic controller with the "Z" button on the face of the controller.

Do you think that nintendo has any plan to introduce a wired controller (similar to game cube)if the Wii mote does not pan out like they expected. Also, do I have to buy an adapter from nintendo to hook up to my Wii to the internet or will the one I have that came with the cable modem work?

This is the way Nintendo is banking people will want to play. It's the whole design behind the Wii so don't look for them to abandon it. You can use the Wii Classic Controller for Virtual Console games, and the Gamecube controller can be connected to the Wii also for Gamecube games.

As for the internet. The Wii has a built-in wireless internet, so if you have a wireless router connection, you're good to go, but if you want to plug into the Wii with an Ethernet cable, you will have to buy the LAN adapter.

On a side note: I got in my Wii component cables from Nintendo today. It appears they rushed them out in order for people to have them in time for the launch. They are also available from Nintendo's Online Store for $29.95.

I just got the call from Gamestop that I can pick my Wii system and games up tomorrow night at midnight so I'll be posting pics and impressions of the Wii system and the following games tomorrow night at around 1:30am CST.

- Zelda: TP
- Rayman Raving Rabbids
- ExciteTruck
- Super Monkey Ball Banana Blitz

I'm also going to take a look at the Wii's Virtual Console games and download a few to see how they look and play. Should be a lot of fun.

Well you have something to look forward to. The Wii is about as much fun with a console as I've had since the Super NES. Enjoy that Wii when you get it!

Corbie,
How does the new zelda play? I bought the system for my son and he has to wait till Xmas to get it. So right now it is sitting around not being used and its killing me because I want to play it. I heard Red Steel might not be that great. I bought Call of Duty 3, Zelda, and Avatar. Have you heard any feedbak on these games?

Zelda: Twilight Princess is an outstanding game. It's got a great control system using both the Wii Remote and the Nunchuck controller. Easily the best of the launch lineup of games. Red Steel was a big dissapointment for me. I didn't get it on launch night and should have listened to my insticts when I went and bought it a few days later. The control is sloppy and the graphics aren't very well drawn. It might have a little to do with the fact that this game received so much hype, but it's really a very mediocre game. I haven't heard much about the other two games, but I did see that Call of Duty 3 got a pretty good review. You're going to really enjoy the system, it's a lot of fun. Super Monkey Ball Banana Blitz is one you should check out as well. Great amount of levels in story mode and a TON of mini-games for one or multiple players.

Does the classic controller plug into the Wii mote or does it plug into the gamecube controller slot?

You can play the Wii on a plasma TV, just make sure it's a newer model plasma, as older model plasma TVs had a pretty serious problem with burn-in. The Classic controller plugs into the Wii Remote just like the Nunchuck attachment does.

That's from Wario Ware Smooth Moves which comes out in the US in January 2007. Many people have emailed asking about that commercial and the woman running in place. Hope this helps you out.

I've been checking the stores for my sister that's trying to get her kids a Wii and Target got in some yesterday and I managed to grab one. They got in 15 of them and they were gone as I stood there right as they rolled them out on the dolley. When I called Best Buy on Friday they told me they had some and were going to put them out on Sunday so I would assume those are gone as well. If i were you, I'd call around to the stores and bug them a little. Sometimes they'll give you some information just to get you to leave them alone. : ) And always try to check EB Games and GameStop around noon. That's when I always see them putting some out. Good luck finding one.

Ugh -- Had GrandPa buy a Wii in Iowa. He just sent it via UPS to us today. I waited until the kids went to bed and set it up -- making, of course, sure that it would be SAFE for THEIR use...

I set it up properly... etc...

The drive wouldn't take my Sport's disc. Kind of rumbled a bit in there, but wouldn't take it. So I pushed it a bit and it went in past the felt but still wouldn't give me the option to START on the Wii Disc channel.

Had to use some plastic tweezers to get it out. Tried a few more times.

Powered down... unplugged to get all the flowing electrons out... in the video editing world we call this the Guinness Method... un-plug and have a beer...

THAT time it took it out of my fingers, but never got it fully past the felt.

Have you been hearing of drive mechanism failures? I read thru a few of these 5 pages... I'll be happy to take a slap if you point out the exact thread this was mentioned on.

Anyway -- Nintendo of course doesn't want you to take it back to the store. I submitted a request thru their website and will call again tomorrow.

We don't have the recept, but hope to have it faxed to us soon. I'm going to try and go to the WalMart locally and see if they won't hold onto one for us and take THIS back.

Thoughts?

CaptM

Man that's a tough break. I'm sorry. So you're basically saying that the drive mechanism won't take the disc all the way into the system, correct? The simple fact that you had to use tweezers to get a disc out would be enough to make me return the system, because I can tell you, you just barely have to put the disc in mine and it snatches it right into the system and almost immediately pulls up on the Wii channel. Even the Gamecube games go in pretty easily.

Try this. Situate the Wii horiztonally with the rubber bumpers on the bottom face down. Now take your Wii Sports disc and ease it into the opening very slowly and gently. Just basically putting enough pressure on it to move it inward. When it takes the disc, grip it for a split second as the Wii tries to take it in and then let go. Sometimes the gri mechanism gets off a little and that should pull it tight if it has. If this doesn't work, you're going to have to return it either to the store or Nintendo. I know that Nintendo will immediately send you a replacement unit but you have to give them your credit card information in case you fail to return the original broken unit. Might be the only thing you can do. I just got my Xbox 360 back from Microsoft today from being fixed for the SECOND time. If you have any more questions let me know.

I packed it all up.. .but am unpacking now!! Though I DID try it on it's side too. But will try again.

Haven't called nintendo yet -- am doing that soon. Will post back.

THAT SAID -- I thought the wiiMote was amazingly sensitive and even just navagating the menu system was a joy.

Anyway -- back to the box!

CaptM

EDIT:

Nintendo was great about it... yup... bad mechanism. We'll send on out today!! Just send along the old one in the same box with the pre-pay label.

Cool!

Well I'm glad you're getting a new one. I have to say, I have all three next gen consoles, and it's the Wii that's taken the most of my time. I've got two family members in the hospital so I spend most of my time off work there, but I've managed to squeeze in a little Wii here and there. Go Elebits today and it's a unique and fun game. Good luck with your new system. Hope it works perfectly!

I keep reading about the rechargable batteries with docking stations that will be available from other companies for the Wiimote in 07. I am still unsure if we have to use regular batteries or can we use rechargable batteries for the wiimote. If we can use rechargable batteries, do they have to be a certain kind?

Help!

I'm pretty new to the gaming world. I've decided to buy a Wii, and my friend really wants to get Dance Dance Revolution with Mario for Gamecube. Because this game is no longer available in North America, the prices on eBay are just outrageous.

I see that the game is still available in Japan. Will the Wii play Gamecube games made in Japan?

Does anyone know if DDR (any version -- with or without Mario) is going to be released for Wii?

Thank you.

The Japanese Gamecube games are region-locked and will not play on a US Wii or Gamecube system. And I agree, the going rate for Dance Dance Revolution is outrageous. I did some checking and I haven't seen any news on a DDR release for the Wii but given the popularity of the dancing games and the control-style of the Wii, I'd still think it would be a game that we'll see a release for on the Wii at some point. If I see any news I'll email you and let you know.

Although the Wii was originally thought to be region-free, it's since been proven in every game available so far that games will only play on the system of the same region. If you bought a US Wii system you can ONLY play US games on it and vice versa. Japanese Wii games will ONLY play on a Japanese Wii and UK games will ONLY play on a UK Wii.

And as for Jacob's question, that really should have been the FIRST question on the list. : ) I would have know about water intoxication as I remember a runner years ago near here that dies from drinking too much water. Up until then I had never heard of drinking too much water killing you. I feel sorry for her family and she was only trying to do something nice for them. Shame. And Nintendo needs to get their ass in gear and get those systems out. Reggie's promise for "No Shortages" isn't coming true. I can't believe they're still so hard to find. I'm very glad that I preordered one and got it on launch night now. Didn't think much about it at the time as the PS3 was supposed to be much harder to find. : )

Oh and one more thing...anyone that owns a Wii needs to go NOW and grab Wario Ware Smooth Moves. Best game out for the Wii so far. Amazing!

I am having a hard time finding the connector needed from my cable modem to the Wii. Does anyone know where they can be purchased? I do not have a wireless system as of yet but if the cost of the connector cable is to much I will get the wireless and not have to worry about it.

Here is a LAN adapter for $29.99. Works like a charm.
