Buy decision - Del Axim x3i or Sony Clie TJ37 ?
      #10640 - 05/07/04 03:03 AM

I?m down to choosing between Dell Axim x3i or a Sony Clie TJ37.
My general requirements:

? $300 or less for PDA or PPC.
? Battery Life (4 hours or so before recharging)
? Ruggedness is key. I got scared away from some Palms because of a lot of user comments that said even easy drops onto beds and fluffy carpets knocked out the screens. My machine will have to take some banging around and I don't want to worry about it.
? WiFi (built in or card, I don?t care). Bluetooth would be nice, but WiFi seems better because it seems like it?s the coming universal standard for public access, etc.
? Ability to create and edit simple Word files (whether with stylus or PDA keyboard, I don?t care)
? Friendly connection to iMac running MS Office on Panther (if I have to install a PC-to-Mac synching program on the iMac, I don?t care)
? Question: is it easier/faster/less glitchey to use Docs to Go (Palm) or Pocket PC versions of Word and PowerPoint?

I?ve worked in the Windows world most of my life, new to Mac in my home office (finally got tired of all the Windows viruses and worms). I like elegant design and simplicity of use. I?m unable to get my hands on both of my final choices, so some guidance would be welcome. Thanks!

With either, you'll end up visiting www.markspace.com to get a copy of MissingSync for the Mac syncing bit.

It's easy to work with Word and Excel docs on either platform, but Docs To Go on the Palm supports more advanced formatting. Pocket PCs do not come with a Pocket version of PowerPoint, so you'd have to buy a 3rd party app. The basic version of Docs To Go that's bundled with Clies and Palms doesn't come with a PowerPoint app, so you'll have to upgrade to the more full-featured version (I believe they offer upgrade pricing for folks who have the bundled version).

PDAs are consumer electronics/computers, so they aren't super-great at taking drops and punishment. That said, a fall onto a bed or a soft fluffy carpet shouldn't kill one.

If you go with the Dell X3i, get their extended battery, because it won't last more than 3 hours when using WiFi.

The Documents to go that came with my T|E has the Sideshow to Go (PowerPoint). I upgraded to the Premium for the Charts, viewing pictures and the spell checker. Works fine but I think the Pocket PC Word has a faster spell checker and the automatic word completion function of the Pocket PC Word which I at first thought was annoying but I wish the Palm Documents to Go had it now.
