Our company has lots of IT field service engineers. We like to keep up-to-the-minute tabs on what they're up to, mainly to ensure customer satisfaction & SLAs.
Currently, they use a WAP application to log changes in their status, e.g. "travelling to client site", or "working on-site". This doesn't work perfectly, however, because 1. they frequently work out of cell coverage, and then have to remember to enter times later; 2. the WAP application is not especially user-friendly.
We are considering upgrading them to PDAs, with the idea being they could have continuous access to a fat-client application (even out of coverage) which could synch whenever a signal is available. The application would probably also have a nicer feel than the WAP app.
As I see it, we have two ways to go: in-house development (we have a Windows development team), or third-party. If we go in-house, we'll probably be looking for some development add-ons to help hook up the PDA to a mobile phone and synch when a signal is available.
Any recommendations for 3rd-party or development add-ons?
