Hi -
I just read your wonderfully written review of the new Dell Axims. I bought one yesterday and it was good to read that I made a good choice as a replacement for my Toshiba PDA (which by the way has bad touch screen after 18 months of use).

I know what you mean, some screens on some PDAs do make a faint buzzing sound. So far our Axim X30 312 and 624MHz units have been silent. It uses the same display as the X3, which was also silent.

Sorry that while we have a library of many games, Pocket Fritz isn't among them. I wouldn't expect it to have a great impact on battery life, as the intense processing time is very short in chess games.

CF slots are becoming less common on Pocket PCs, most have SD slots. The X30 uses the same casing and many parts from the X3 which also lacks a CF slot.

Good review. Full of information. But missing a CF slot and i see no mention of it. Why not? CF is widely used, why leave it out?

gfDoom runs great on both the 312 and 624MHz X30 models. Quite fast even with graphic detail set to high when running the sharware wad file from the gfDoom site.
MorphGear and games also run fine- no complaints here about game speed.

You don't have to pay any monthly fees to use your GPS.
A spare extended battery might be a good idea if you plan on being away from AC during the day, esp. if you'll be using WiFi/Bluetooth.
As for cases, check out our review: http://www.pdabuyersguide.com/tips/Dell_Axim_X3_cases.htm

In theory it should work-- though a driver might be necessary. We don't have any BT keyboards on hand however. Can't wait unti the Think Outside wireless Bluetooth keyboard comes out!

I was wondering if anyone has tried connecting a Bluetooth keyboard with the X30. I know theoretically this ought to be possible, but has anyone actually gotten it to work?

Not sure what you mean by "convert" it. You can buy an add-on GPS for the Dell (cabled or Bluetooth). Check out our GPS reviews to get an idea what's out there: http://www.pdabuyersguide.com/tips/GPS/index.htm

As with most PDA cases designed for the standard battery, you'll find it hard to squeeze the unit in the case when it has the extended battery. For extended battery use, you're best off looking for a case made for that.

Great review, the cases for the X3/X30 as well. I was wondering how the extended battery goes with the cases.

I haven't heard of any plans from Dell to release a VGA Pocket PC. Dell usually shys away from cutting edge technology and goes with affordable mass-market solutions across their product line. As such, I don't think you'll find a VGA Pocket PC as cheap as the Dell X30 models.
ASUS is supposed to have their VGA Pocket PC out in June and HP is rumored to have theirs out in late July (iPAQ 4700). I'm not sure what's up with the the Toshiba e805, which seems to be out in Europe with 2003 SE, but not here in the US or Canada. These are Windows Mobile 2003 SE devices, so all will support landscape to portrait orientation swapping on the fly. The iPAQ 4700 is said to have both BT and WiFi.

The Tungsten E and Dell X30 are good choices-- depends if you like Palm or Pocket PC better. The Sony Clie SJ33 was discontinued a while ago, so I wouldn't go with that one.

Both Axim X30 units were set to Max performance under Power settings.
Morphgear running Asteroids:
X30 312MHz gets an average of 30fps X30 624MHz gets an average of 57fps
PocketQuake (not Quake II)in portrait mode with unpacked shareware game data file uncompressed on a Sandisk 256 meg SD card (that's not a fast card):
X30 312 MHz gets 14.2 fps X30 624 MHz gets 25.3 fps

I don't see any reason why Voice Over IP apps wouldn't work on the X30

I'm looking to get a pocket pc and want to save money on my current cell phone bill. Does anyone know if the Dell Axim X30 supports voip? I was trying to decide between the x30 and the ipaq h5555.

Handwriting recognition seems unchanged on the faster models.
