My goodness, that reviewer was more than a little cranky. I'd say that s/he exaggerated the points, and yes Windows Mobile 2003 is faster than 2002.

The Axims, like most Pocket PCs, don't support USB host, which means you can't plug USB peripherals directly into it.

If you're seriously into watching good quality videos on a Pocket PC, I'd recommend a 400MHz (or higher) model. I mean if you want to encode them so they look very nice and will frequently be watching videos on the PPC. You don't need 624MHz to do this, any of the 400MHz PPCs with good graphics benchmarks, such as the iPAQ 2215, Toshiba e805 and ASUS A620 will do a great job.

For folks who occasionally watch videos of the quality available on download sites rather than custom encoded movies at HQ, a slower PPC is fine.

It comes with a world charger: 100 - 240V, 50 - 60 Hz. All you should need is a prong adapter (assuming Aussie outlets are different from US).

They both can do the things you list and are great units, so it comes down to which one you fancy more. For example, do you want a camera? Do you prefer Palm or Pocket PC OS?

Do you have a preference for Palm or Pocket PC? That can be a deciding factor.

Also, if WiFi is important to you, there isn't a WiFi card available for the Zire 72 currently.

Palm OS 5 includes many enhancements including better support for running programs from storage cards, support for higher resolutions and Grafitti 2 handwriting recognition.

Not to get off topic too much, but I had a question about the Axim X30's 802.11b encryption. Does it support 128-bit? I couldn't find that in the review or Dell's website. (BTW: Excellent review!!)

All current Pocket PCs with WiFi support both 64 bit (40 bit) and 128 bit encryption.

I read on another site that there were problems running some 3rd party apps in landscape mode on the Axim X30. Any word on how well Acrobat Reader or RepliGo run in landscape mode? I really need a new device, and I'm now leaning toward a PPC, but pdf access is "mission critical" for me. Thanx

You mean Pocket PCs? Since they don't come with Mac syncing software you'd need to buy 3rd party software like MissingSync for Pocket PC from www.markspace.com .

Well, I didn't hate the d-pad all that much . Our game reviewer, JadeDragon, likes it well enough.

If you want to play games and watch videos you'll probably want to get an SD storage card. There's a performance hit with a card, but if you get one of the high speed cards it won't be terribly noticeable.

I understand that the X30 can be used as a digital voice recorder.
How good is the sound quality and how sensitive is the mic?
Also, can the voice recordings be saved to pc like text?

Voice recordings are in WAV format and can be transferred to the PC.
Sound quality is good enough for meetings, but you wouldn't want to replace your Mini Disc recorder for live music recordings. The mic is reasonably sensitive- and will record sounds within 6 feet clearly. If the speaker is 30 feet away, they may sound muffled or faint.
