Q1:Can someone shed light on the quality of the voicerecording function of the Palm Zire. I want to be interviewing people for a journalism class. The recordings may end up on a short video piece or just for taking dication notes.
Q2: How much recording time would I get with the standard 32mb vs the 128mb?

4 times more- the storage card capacity directly correlates with recording time.

The recording quality is pretty good up close, but degrades quickly with distance. It gets pretty weak past 2 - 3 feet, maybe 4 depending on the volume of the recorded voice. The tiny microphone is a somewhat directional as well. Although you can playback through the built-in speaker, you can hear much better through a headset.
If you're going to save recordings direct to the SD card, get a fast writing card. Slower writing cards like Toshiba especially and Sandisk to some extent will have drop-outs and generally poor quality. Fast writing cards like Panasonic, though a bit more expensive, produce excellent results.
To give you a feel for recording time, I have about 33 MB free on my SD card and Voice Recorder says it will hold 144 minutes of recording.
