Ipaq 4150 VS ASUS Mypal A716
      #12209 - 06/17/04 06:40 AM

Hi there,
Guess what, I'm looking for a PDA.
The university I'm with has invested in a WLan network covering the entire campus so WIFI is a must. I also have a BT phone, so I?d like to have that. Furthermore it has to be powerful enough to last a few years. My own two choices are listed above in the subject. The main differences between those two only seem to be the size (the ipaq is much smaller) and the CF slot that?s only available on the ASUS.
Is the CF slot important enough to counterbalance the increase of size?
Does someone have some good other arguments why one of these should be the better buy?

Coen

The CF slot is handy if you wish to use cards that only come in CF format such as 56k dialup modems and wired Ethernet cards. CF memory cards are still cheaper than SD memory cards as well. If those don't matter to you, but size does then the HP wins. If the CF slot sounds useful, then go with the ASUS.

Newbie here, great site, although the search function is a bit difficult.

Anyway, I am looking at the ASUS A716 as well, because I will use whatever Pocket PC I nab to send print quality photos from questionable locations.I need the CF slot, so it looks like the two ASUS units, and the Ipaq 2215 are my only viable options right now. The A716 looks to be a real nice unit, but I can't physically get my hands on one, so I need advice from the well. I am a bit leery about the service availability of ASUS, and I need this thing to be rock solid for sending. Any experience with ASUS or Ipaq service in general?

This probably should be another thread, but this seems to be the only one referring ASUS.

I believe ASUS should be pretty responsive for warranty repairs. Though they aren't well known as a Pocket PC manufacturer here in the US, they are one of the top motherboard manufacturers and so are set up to deal with US support and warranty work.

Phoneblaster, only the devices listed here: http://www.pdabuyersguide.com/smartphone.htm have phones built in. The iPAQ 4150 and ASUS A716 are not among those. They are regular Pocket PC PDAs.

Read our reviews of Bluetooth GPS for Pocket PCs. Those are you best choices.

Can't you add on a voice card to this ASUS mypal A716 and have it integrated into the phone? It does have a type II slot... right? What card would you recommend?

You could use a CF card like the Sprint 2031 reviewed on our site from Sprint (I think they're still selling it) or the Audiovox GSM card, which is hard to find.
